River Thames Trip - Sunday 13th Feb

Evening all.

I`m planning a jolly on the Thames to test out some repairs to my boat this Sunday.

Will launch from Putney Embankment in the morning drive through town to Canary Wharf and stop at a pub for lunch. In the afternoon will prob head down towards the Thames Barrier and Barking Creek area then head back up the river to Putney.

We are hoping to launch around 1030. (Its low tide at about 12 so it may be a bit of a struggle if anybody brings a monster boat!)

By the time we return there a 7m tide so recovery will be easy.

Can't make it this time I'm afraid as new Rib does not come till end of Feb, but if you go out after that I'll tag on if that's ok

damn, i live in putnety and would have loved to come down and had a look at a few ribs and watch people launch, unfortunately i'm learning to dive this weekend (which will be fun anyway)

pity i dont have my own rib really, and i doubt my canoe would keep up

Although I cant make the trip I am interested to know?
We live upstream of Oxford on The Thames and you need a permit
to use any kind of watercraft on our end of the river. Do you need one in the area you are cruising in?
The Environmental Agency who "Police" the river are some real jobsworths and will fine you even if you are using an Airbed.

You do not need a permit on the tidal Thames such as Putney.

You need a permit on the non tidal areas, ie from Teddington upstream. The cost of the permit, less than a tenner for my boat goes to the cost of maintaining the massive locks and flood defence gear. As the Agency is practically self funding in respects of its navigation function I happily pay the money.

Jobsworths? Interesting comment. I wonder if anybody will agree with you? All the EA staff I have come across are keen to help and keen to ensure they get all the revenue they can to promote boating. Just cause they chase people up on unpaid navigation licences does not mean they are a jobsworth, well not in my book anyway.

Either way it would be nice to see you on a future spin.

There'll actually be around 5 boats including swifty launching. (slip can't cope with any more trailers). Good chance we'll see you Chris.

You must have a better class of EAO up your way? Here they bullied a couple of kids in an inflatable canoe which in any stretch of the imagination is not going to cause great damage to the environment!
Anyway not going to get on my soap box about it again - hope you have a great trip.

I think its quite a good job that the EA do on the river, even though they might come across as being a bit grumpy, but i am sure anybody in an enforcement role could possibly be guilty of that one from time to time, the amount of crap they get that we dont see....

But then again we can all have a bad day i guess.

I know a couple of enforcement units that have had jet ski hooligans to deal with all day in a harbour and then get some kids plodding along in a boat and the kids get it in the neck a bit. At the end of the day i guess its for the safety of water users. They see people drown more often than we do.
