Matt,

As you are going inland have got ATIS ie; Automatic Transmitter Identification System. Mike C pointed this out to me as we will be going through the Kiel Canal. I had only just applied for my VHF licence so I have sent Ofcom an email requesting this is added to my licence and a number is allocated. I understand all new VHF radios are ATIS ready. I also understand that if one is planning an inland water cruise on the continent this is now compulsory. Old radios with DSC can be modified to take the ATIS facility.

Hi Andre
Yes, I got my ATIS sorted earlier this year. OFCOM don't actually add it to your license, they just issue a notice of variation (see attached), as you can see they just add a 9 in front of your mmsi number.

I'm not sure that all new radios come ATIS ready, probably depends where you buy it, it's actually illegal to use ATIS in UK waters. I bought a new Icom radio late last year, I've had to send it away recently to have ATIS enabled on it. It only cost £20 to have done.

No doubt you already have been, but my advice is to do your homework on rules and regulations, inland waterways have a huge amount of legislation. Don't forget your ICC and CEVNI

Matt , well done, I understand that is has become compulsory since 2009 so I have now written to Ofcom so they can issue a notice of variation. as we are going to go via the Kiel Canal best to be within the law.

Andre, I applied to OFCOM for my Notice of Variation by email on a Sunday and received it back by return of email on the following Monday. Apparently, it then takes up to a month for the ATIS number to be registered on the central Brussels database which is updated monthly. Remember also that you need to carry with you a complete copy (all 32 pages) of the Basel Agreement (downloadable from: http://www.rainwat.bipt.be/rainboat.html although you might want to get rid of the 'tracked changes' before printing it out) and carry a copy of the CEVNI Regulations. As well as the other bureaucratic paperwork. All in an open boat!

Weather

I hope the weather stays in its current form for your adventures to Paris. A little chilly for camping but lovely in the daytimes for making long passages.

Lets just say that I am now statistically on a par with the Gotchi's, although I have a strong suspicion there was a helluva lot less referring to the book going on at this end.

Just got send my ICC off for endorsement and hope it gets returned within the next 17 days

It is with deep deep regret that we are stepping back from this one.

Thanks to Martini for the kind offer of space aboard, but aside from the special vaguaries that the lead-in that this holiday has brought the Witch has done her back in meaning she can neither go nor hold the fort. Work wise was always going to be a balance: Busy enough to afford to go and not so busy as to have the time!

I described this trip as a one in a lifetime, it just seems it wont be in my lifetime!

We really hope you all have a great time, if the weather at the moment is anything to go by it will be a scorcher. We shall be following the cruise by AIS and text and what posted morsels of photos you can throw our way!

Does Dr Ulman do a suspension seat model for broomsticks?

11 days to go!!

David, are you still in?

I've been working round the clock trying to get myself organised, still got a list a mile long

I'll hopefully get together with Erin in the next day or 2 to organise hotels, we've got a bit of an odd number to work with as far as rooms go: Double for Keith/Sab, Then it'll have to be either a twin + a single for Paul, David and myself, or possibly a family room if we can get one, or 3 singles if no one wants to share?

Any budding weather forecasters want to give us a longe range before we book?!

I haven't looked at the Paris trip google map for a while, I'm sure there was some other points I was going to add. When it's done, does someone more intelligent than me want to convert it to a Garmin file to upload to the plotters?

Matt,
I've sent you an email. I'd give you a ring but I've lost your number.

My thoughts as well, think we peaked to early

Our Spring mini-heatwave is normally followed by 3 weeks of rain!
