I suppose I better send my radio back to Icom before I fit it to set it up for ATIS. Shame I didn't think about that when I ordered it

Sorry I didn't think of the ATIS thing at the time

On the bright side Icom have a great reputation for quick turnaround and easy contactabilityness, even though they are in deepest darkest Kent.

Just been chatting through this cruise idea with Martini and we were contemplating distances and timescales. Because of the speed restrictions on the river, there is no way this is a 1 day cruise, especially given the distances from Jersey to Honfleur. Doing a quick estimate on my plotter software, the legs break down as follows:-

Jersey to Cherbourg - 50nm +/-
Cherbourg to Honfleur - 70nm
Honfleur to Rouen - 60nm
Rouen to Paris - 120nm

We may need a small detour to Alderney as well to pick up Malthouse.

Just need to pick a date and choose some weather

Yep, it's always going to be a long one, even if we only have a day in Paris.

That's why I was going to propose Easter hols for this one as theres already 4 days without time off work.

I was planning to start a few upcoming cruises threads very soon inc one for this trip unless someone beats me to it.

Even longer now that I have corrected my 'small' error in locating famous cities where they really are, and not where I thought they were. Seem to have muddled up Rouen with Paris. Previous post now edited. May need a bit more fuel than first thought as well.

There are marinas in Le Havre and Rouen and a first class facility at the Port de Plaisance Paris-Arsenal just upstream from Notre Dame cathedral. There is fuel available at each of these as well as from river-side garages along the way. The speed limit from Le Havre to Rouen is 15kts and from Rouen to Paris there is a limit of 10kts.
I'll dig out my Seine pilotage book and see what they quote for distances

What dictates the viability of this trip is the availability of fuel at Rouen and Paris. Previous trips have had a nightmare with the fuel barges only accepting French fuel credit cards and having strange opening hours. The only other option is 'portage' which means you're hostage to how far the nearest garage is. Clearly a trolley is a 'must have' accessory here.

In any case, I'll need to get my ICC sorted at some stage as well as the exam thingy for French waterways before I can come along. I'd like to think that as a hero of Avranches the French would grant me access to any river, no questions asked....er..

I've got the Fluviacarte guide for La Seine Aval (Le Havre to Paris), by all accounts it's the "bible" for this route but I keep hearing the info on facilities is inaccurate.

From what I've gleaned from hours of net searching is that fuel is reasonably available quayside in the non tidal section (Paris-Rouen) PK0 to PK 242. PK, or "Point Kilometre" is the distance in km from the Paris lock near Notre Dame. The open sea is at PK355, Rouen is at PK242.

So fuel appears to be available at PK81 Marina Port St. Louis, PK121 Port L'llon and PK 241 Rouen. Also in Paris itself, 3 or 4 clicks upstream of the lock, near to the Paris Arsenal marina, the main place to stay in Paris.

Downstream of Rouen there appears to be no fuel until Le Havre which is about 90nm, this would seem to be the longest leg without fuel, all needs confirmation though.

I've just spotted a throwaway comment in my guide about locks being closed at Easter but can't find anymore on this so who knows

I can see this is going to take some organisation....

I think Paris would require longer than four days. With a 10-15kt speed limit and 90-100 mile legs that's a long time at the helm. I reckon a week would be more realistic. Even getting to Cherbourg from Jersey is a bit of a long haul!

It is a good 2 days each way minimum. 4 hours Jersey to Honfleur, 6 hours Honfleur to Rouen, not worked out travel time for Rouen to Paris yet.

The tidal part of the river, Honfleur to Rouen is the tricky bit, timing needs to be right on the day to do it in 6 hours. The speed limit for most of it is 28 km/hr, 14 km/hr for the last 40km. The interesting bit is that this is max speed through the water, so if you time it wrong you can easily make that 9 or 10 hours. The time to enter the river at Honfleur is LW+2 to get a fair tide all the way up. Of course, the tide times for the particular day which dictate when you enter the river will also have an effect on whether you fit another leg in before or after that leg. The other thing to bear in mind is that navigation is prohibited in the tidal river between sunset and sunrise.

One option is to pick a day with a LW Le Havre/Honfleur around 10am. Enter the river at 12.00, arriving Rouen at 18.00 for an overnight stop. This could work well for CI'ers specially if we overnighted in Alderney the night before, leaving say 06.00/07.00. We'd need time at Honfleur to group up, refuel etc, before setting off at 12.00.

Admittedly that won't work well for Tommy coming across the Channel so maybe a LW of 06.00/07.00, we all meet up and overnight in Honfleur or Le Havre and get to Rouen mid afternoon. This would then give the option of going further upstream as night nav is allowed further up.

The only trouble with racing up there is we'll miss the unbelievable amount of interesting stuff there is to see on the way, we could easily spend a month getting there if we didn't have jobs to go to

I think a plan is brewing nicely here.

Well, if that happens, I strongly suggest you avoid any contact with my other half until at least 10 am. She takes a good bit of time to wake up, with a grumpiness ratio which is exponential the earlier the start . And if it's for a ribnet/boat related expedition, then it's even worse.

A couple of links with snippets of useful info

http://www.cnh-honfleur.net/Presentation,1,0,62.html
http://www.tagweb.co.uk/french-water...-honfleur.html

I tend to think that option 2 of meeting up in Honfleur is the better idea than trying to get across form Alderney early am in time for a midday river start. I can see that going wrong somewhere. Either sea conditions or just tiredness for so much in one day. I also think it would be good to have a bit of time in Honfleur as it looks quite interesting.

Honfleur it is then

Lots of good info on that 2nd link, the guy who's website it is also posts on YBW and is very helpful

I suppose I better get off of here and shave, shower etc if I'm picking you up for dinner in an hour

And your fiance as well for clarification, just read that back and didn't like how it sounded!

Glad you clarified that. I could hear the Ribnet congregation starting to murmur, and the rumours forming

This looks like it might have most of the detail we would need. A map/chart for each mile of the river from Paris to the Sea.

Bottom of page 2 would be relevant to us. Various engineering works due in 2011 with some locks closed. Not sure I fully understand whether they will be closed or just have restricted access/use. Need to get the Franglais dictionary out.

Extra Holiday

Some bloke and his lady are getting married on the 29th April.

This is also gonna be a public holiday so gives you 10 days off for only 3 work days (holiday / leave) potentially !!

Friday 22 April - Sunday 01 May

Sounds like an awesome trip.
