OK, cool.

Plan is to get the new battery in and test the engine on muffs tonight / tomorrow.

I've got a verbal vote for Largs as a launch point already, so i'll probably be there sometime between 9.30 & 10 (any earlier and I'll spend longer on the M8 than afloat! )

The question now is.....where to? (hopefully not a repair shop on Wednesday!!!)

App dropped my previous typing so in summary:

Engine fired within 10s of cranking. Cooling water out the telltale so boat is go.

Problem is my big kid has been projectile puking all day. Seems to be getting better but to check school will be doable I'll be dropping straight off rather than the much earlier kids club.

So I'll either be at Largs for realistically 10.30 or if I'm going to be spending the day mopping up puke I'll post here by 8.

Paul if u are at Rothesay can you pm me your mobile number so I can keep you posted. Alternatively re read this thread before leaving for Largs.

Right I'm off to bed hoping the standard 24hr small kids sickness thing extends to bigger weans.

OK, after a lot of last minute plan changing I got a fantastic day.

Not only did the engine perform faultlessly, (fired almost instantly) I only appear to have missed one small bit on the top f my Right calf with the factor 50.

So, to the cruise:

As I was short of time I decided to do a loch I have never managed to make a visit to - Loch Striven.

Having launched at Largs (marina) and slapped on a gallon of sun cream, I headed out, opened the throttle, and after a wee tweak to the trim, was cruising at a nice 4800rpm / 23 knots. I tried a WOT test (One thing I have done - as a quick aside for Clamshell owners - was to remove the mercury tilt switch from the deadman circuit. I had been beginning to suspect it might have been the cause of the rough running at WOT), so, here I was <sans switch> and the revs were climbing. I got to the dizzy heights of 32.5 knots, never missing a beat.....and then realised I couldn't for the life of me remember the WOT RPM, which one thought meant I had just exceeded by 400! So, remembering the reason I had to rebuild it all those years ago, I dropped back to 5K and cruised happily at 25 knots all the way to Ardyne point, the only interruptions being the wake from "Argyll" (The Gourock - Dunoon Ferry) and a couple of Porpoise fins whivch showed no interest in a chase and also got out of range so fast I never managed a pic! I did however get one of the ferry! (first Pic)


I then bore right slightly (! I think I might be thinking of a cartoon of yore - Peyton or someone like that?) Anyhow, carried on up Striven (2nd Pic) to the point where my echo sounder went from showing me tens of metres to a few, killed the engine and stopped for lunch




Pleasant enough Loch, plenty of fish farms, and chunks of it reminded me of a scaled down Loch Etive. (might even be a location for Poly's camping trip - as long as nobody wants a hotel / B&B!) so, I drifted around over the shallows with one eye over the side for the length of a couple of sandwiches! (3rd & 4th Pics)

Part 2:

So, having cured the hunger, I turned round & motored back. Assuming these all appear below in order:

The ride down Striven was tiny chop. Might as well not have been there chop, but the mountains like all good Scottish valleys had increased the wind speed, but not enough to bother putting anything over the t-shirt. (first pic)

Then again, round Ardyne point, and aim for the top end of Cumbrae..... (2nd pic, taken at 25 knots!)

Once again the porpoises (?) showed fins, and even although I stopped (usually works!) they just meandered off towards Toward..... So I aimed for The top of Cumbrae (again, and as I motored across the firth the wind just got less and less....... (remaining Pics)


So there you have it. 3 hrs in a Rib, one new Loch, and a surprisingly well behaved engine!

its one of the contingencies for the contingency if the weather doesn't behave (forecast currently is still changing daily).

It was, ignoring the patch on my leg where I missed with the factor 50 (been annoying me all day today!), and the inevitable traffic through Glasgow on the way home.....

The other plus is because of the last minute need to get home sharp-ish I have been promised a whole day sometime soon.....

Only small problem might be getting there from Largs if the weather cr@ps out - there's going to be an exposed bit of run whichever way you go......
