went to pickup the boat early in the morning for an early start as it was looking like a good day ahead, the key broke off in the large disklock!!! so had to hacksaw the lock off, hmmmm good start to the day
took the boat home and loaded it up, set off and realised i had left my mobile at home but hey no worries
got onto the a3 and just as we were coming to the a3m going round a left hander we heard a funny metallic tinkling noise, slowed right down but everything seemed ok, a car went past gesturing behind us urgently.
stopped and checked the wheels, one was smoking quite badly and the bearing was no-where to be seen, looked behind and loads of cars backed up, so decided to drag the boat to safety as was on a lefthander on the dual carridge way, pulled the boat about half a mile to an exit road and somewhere safe to stop
luckily the wheel didnt fall off, but i melted some metal on the nut
called the rac....they told me i wasnt covered for trailers.....oh shite
got the number of a trailer place in alton from richard, called em and went and picked up the biggest car trailer they had
got it back to the boat......guess what....trailer wheels too wide to fit boat trailer on....so took the car trailer back....£35 lighter
called green flag to consider joining, if i had joined it was 60 per year and cover would start at midnight
i could sit in the car till midnight then call em! watching tv luckily!, said i would call em back as wanted to consider my options
a mate called em trying to help and spilled the beans that i had broken down and they said.......woooooaaa no way cover.....so that killed that option
a mate surfed the internet and phoned a few recovery places and was looking like an expensive recovery home due to the length of the boat and trailer and its width....they all said it comes under a commercial recovery.....shite
after a few hours of mucking about trying to source a relatively inexpensive way home i called the rac again, quizzed them about the trailer because i took out special cover via the camping and caravan club to cover the motorhome due to length, the lady on the phone said let me check......then let me speak to my manager.....minutes later........oh er um yes you are covered......when you phoned earlier the guy was wrong to say you are not covered....we will send someone asap......aaaaaarrrrrrrrrssssssooooollllleeesss, but i was chuffed i could get the boat home.
arrived home around 5.30
the stupid thing is i have some bearings on order and they should have been with me thursday/friday because i wanted to change them before the trip
also i may have to change the whole axle as there is some damage to the axel on that side.
these sealed bearings are shite, if i get a new axle i am going for tapperd roller bearings if i can, apparently avonride do give that option
if you are ordering up a new trailer and have the options of bearing types then i would not suggest sealed ones...........the guy at southern trailers said lots of people are having problems with them, they are not tolerant to the slightest bit of water or dirt and are trying to take the trailer manufacturers to court over failures.
debs had a few hours sunbathing in the front of the boat on the side of the A3 so not all was lost
