North devon ilfracombe - 9 to 29 August 2008

Hi All,
Anyone in the ilfracombe area between august the 19th and 29th. and would like to go out from watermouth cove or ilfracombe harbour? It would be good to meet up with anyone up for a day or two out.

I'm local - I live just down the coast near Appledore. be happy to join you for a trip or two. Have you been around Lundy yet?

Could be well up for this one guys,especialy if we incorporated a Lundy trip! Recently visted Watermouth for a reccie loveley spot,and campsight.Not much leeway either side of high tide though I should imagine?

The harbour master told me you can launch at all states of tide with a smallish rib,
the harbour floor is coarse gravel so you treat the harbour as a shallow slipway. no problems with traction or sinking, if you really get in the sh*t the JCB can be used.
havent tried it yet though!
there is always the lifeboat slip around the corner!
we will have to exchange moby numbers closer to weeks in question and arrange something.
any more interest?

Good idea, Doggie?! as to launching -theym be a liddle bit rougher and tougher in that there neck of the[back woods] I once did a hard boat dive out of Boscastle,we were assured he,and his boat were geared up for divers it turned out thier idea of a dive ladder was a Transit tyre tied to the stern with a bit of rope!! which he had made?? that morning!!
Not much fun when youve been on the shot line for 40 minutes in a 4knot tide ha,good diveing though!!

I've launched/recovered at Watermouth at low tide before-only thing to watch is the tide comes in up the harbour quite fast and you have to drag the trailer out a bit by hand to launch.

Shame I can't make it for this trip

i guess there will be some manhandling of the trailer, the old landrover really doesnt need a swim in the sea to make it rot!
How did you do it? i was guessing the trailer will be easy enough to push out buy hand and recover minus SR, then use a rope to the truck to pull it onto dry land to hitch up?

Exactly like that. The slope is so gentle it doesn't roll on its own.

Sorry to hijack your thread but it looks like you guys are the local experts. I have an Avon 580/Honda 150 that I am thinking of bringing down to Devon this weekend to stay with family near Ilfracombe. What are your views of launching from the slipway at Ilfracombe (next to the RNLI boathouse?). From memory the harbour pretty much dries out at low tide?

Have any of you been round to Woolacombe/Saunton Sands. I know you can't launch from these beaches but is there anywhere you can pick-up/drop-off people or come ashore along the coast from Saunton/Croyde/Woolacombe?

check out the boat launch website for slip details, the one in ilfracombe is really good but as you point out its only useable for ~3-4 hrs around high water, watermouth cove is quieter, but is a beach launch, OK for a 5-6m boat though, all states of tide.
clovelly has a good pub and moorings. not sure about anywhere else though.

Still keeping an eye on things Doggie, all down to timeing[and weather of course] pretty shyzonn at mo! Are you still hoping to do a Lundy cruise?
Want to do the Scilles again when the weather breaks too!!

Lundy is still a possibility depending on the weather, i dont really fancy going if its a terrible day neither will the wife.
i dont know how everyone who is interested whants to play this, but maybe the easiest way is if i give everyone my mobile number then i will be contactable. if a particular day looks promising then perhaps someone else can send out the PMs a day or so before? i wont have internet access easily down there, unless there is a computer i can use on the site.
i believe the slipway at watermouth cove,ilfracombe and bideford are the best options and we could meet up in ilfracombe harbour if anyone is interested. i guess a weekend for most people?
