Moelfre lifeboat day 18th Aug 2012

What thoughts do you have, go Moelfre and back the same way or is there an alternative with it being shallow across the bar?
Do any of you know it well enough to manage it after 3 hours after HW?

I'm now wondering if best option is to just have Saturday as the Moelfre day and look to the Sunday for circumnavigating Anglesey.
If that is a choice would anyone else be going?

We are up for that provided my new boat has a successful maiden voyage to Moelfre, (just about to set off to pick up). The weather looks better for Sunday as well

I am relying on others who know the area but Sunday does look a better day and HW is later so gives a bigger window.

That is a much better option.
Tide times for Sunday along the Strait
HW
Caernarfon Bar 11.00
Fort Belan 11.36
Caernarfon 11.43
Dinorwic 11.56
Menai Bridge 12.40
Beaumaris 12.36
Although the weather reports are all over the place as usual!
Most concur that on Sunday the winds will be less
Ref rain/mist /vis?

If its your first time round
I would go clockwise leaving the Strait at about 10.00 or sooner
Last of the flood, pretty slack then
By the time you get around the top of the Island and towards Point Lynas you will have got past all the overfalls before the worst of the ebb.
Which you don't want to be in on Spring tides!
The North of the Island should be sheltered anyway if the wind stays in the south as predicted.
The Swellies is no problem with a RIB at anytime
The sticky up bits are always in the same place
The prob with Caernarfon bar if there is a swell
You might have 3 metres under you on the crest of a wave and .3 in the trough!!!!
Planning to leave Dinorwic about 09.30 Sunday, going over the Bar towards Porth Dinllaen

I'm debating going clockwise round instead of coming down Menai from Chris's place as there won't be enough water to get back over the bar if we continue round anti-clockwise from Moelfre.

Round the Conwy side sounds good to me, makes it easier for you to spot us and we'll get a chance to see the seals

I don't think we will be able to make it since both parents now in hospital so will be pushed to get everything together for Saturday. Disappointing I am afraid since this date has been in the diary since the beginning of the year. May make it to Moelfre by land to see the lifeboat and perhaps some of you guys on the water.

Doesn't appear they are.

Don't head off anti clockwise after moelfre on your own. It'll be calm there and a misnomer. You'll head off, then as you come past the north tip you'll start to meet the wind if a SW. You'll hit the stacks and skerries with a SW wind over the falling tide, then struggle to get over the bar, time and or weather wise. Then you'd have a loooong trip back round and likely run out of fuel.

If you want to go around, IMHO go clockwise, head over the bar, run with the wind and flood heading North, past the stacks and overfalls at slack, then round to moelfre. With an easy run home in sheltered water on the NE side and back through the strait you'd be fine..... Providing weather is mild of course.

( Remember last time though!!! Against wind over tide in a smallish flighty boat is not fun, even less so without bigger boats flattening the crests 10ft in front of you!)

Indeed, my thoughts exactly, clockwise only option and if not suitable conditions on the west side then will forget the idea and see what Sunday has to offer. Going past stacks on route to Holyhead is only going to be worse so will have to judge by west side once out past the bar. Any doubts it will be abandoned for another day.

Is just go out over bar, run past Llandwyn and if ok, crack on. If not, head back in and down to moelfre with others through strait. Enjoy, I'm at kids birthday party.

Unfortunately no, though parents are down and may be out if fair weather. Give them a wave, they're used to ransoms from Ribnet saying hi these days!
