There is no fuel at Bembridge - the nearest garage to which is Tescos about 5 miles away.

Meeting

Nemo

I can meet a week before no probs except for the previous Friday.

However I don't see any problem with doing all the planning on the Internet.

It will become clear as mud over the next couple of weeks as things start to pan out.

I must admit with regards Bembridge, I find it quite odd that it is quite a large Harbour/Marina with assoiciated works and has no refuelling point.

I think we shaould all be able to carry enough fuel to do it in a 'oner' but its always nice to have back up plans.

Regards Nick Reis.

When the North West Ribsters did a circumnavigation of Anglesey last year we had a Land Rover 'support vehicle' driving around the coast road with spare fuel cans and various other provisions in case of problems. It worked very well and we were able to rendezvous with the Landie at pre-determined venues where the 2-stroke boys were able to take on extra fuel.

Might be worthwhile adopting a similar idea for the IoW, although obviously the Landie would have to be in NATO camouflague for the purposes of this expedition.

Support Ship

I was thinking of putting in for a requisition of a Royal Navy support ship to meet us on the South Side for this expedition.

Seriously though I think we should all carry enough fuel for a 70 mile trip and having started in the Solent area refuel, if required, in Lymington or Yarmouth. That should give us plenty of fuel to get round.

I shall probably be able to carry 55 Litres which on an average day should get me 110 miles. Plenty enough on my little two stroke.

Does anyone coming have any problems in managing 70 miles on self contained fuel ?

If its not a problem then we can dispense with the refuelling stop and just look at somewhere to stop for lunch etc.

Regards Nick Reis.

hhmmm, this sounds like fun although I think I might suffer in my 3.4m flatacraft! Would I be the smallest boat there?! If anyone has ever been in one, they'll know how bloody wet it is! 25hp on the back and I have no idea how far I could go on a potential max capacity of 45litres.

Having now read the whole thread I could comment further. Since I live a mile out of yarmouth and do all my ribbing in the area I may be to offer info of that area. I also spend any summer time not out in my rib at compton bay on the south side. Nice beach but its a shallow surf beach so you wouldn't be able to get in that close.

Email me if you want any info!

Tim

PS petrol prices in Yarmouth are stupid amounts. When I worked at the harbour 3 years ago, its was 98p a litre! Also, great pubs in yarmouth!

Or the bigger boats can carry some extra fuel cans for the little ones.

We find Lymington is always the cheapest quayside petrol in the Solent. Have a look at this site: http://www.marinefuel.info/ We last paid 85p/litre although they did warn us that when they got their next delivery, the price would go up a bit. HTH

I would be happy to carry extra fuel, partly as i love setting light to things and it doesnt bother me really. If I only have a couple of people on the boat i have tonnes of room as i have left the rear deck clear of seats and stuff so have a nice deck area.

I'm really excited about this!

With 'only' 10 gallons on board I plan for 60 miles @ 25mph as a max range with safety margin, so I would plan to top off at Yarmouth before heading to the south side. I could always book a space for a Jerry Can on Granz with Andy Stevens!

Given the growing concern about the issue of fuel, I propose that two squadrons of pocket RIBs launch simultaneous raiding parties on fuel stations in Cowes and Yarmouth, whilst the main flotilla of larger RIBs mounts a diversionary assault on Bembridge.

In the ensuing confusion and under the cover of paintball fire, Andy Stevens will load captured fuel supplies onto Granz and head for the south coast. An auxiliary high-speed RIB squadron utilising direct injection 2-strokes will then deploy from the Needles in order to secure the beach head at Compton Bay on the south coast, thereby enabling Hightower to establish a foothold on the beach for the BBQ.
