Easdale rib rendezvous 2013 - Page 8

I've been sitting at home wanting a holiday for ages, now I'm sitting on the shore front of St Helier Jersey in nettles to get home and get the Rib ready for ERR!

For those of us that are maybe less adventurous and don't fancy the full circumnavigation of Jura, are there any boats doing a smaller jaunt?

Hi Alan hope you are enjoying your break. I wouldn't worry they'll be boats doing smaller runs even down to the Loch and back the same side. Cu there.

That was on the radar, but TBH I haven't actually worked out my actual (road) arrival time yet. Will probably make a L/R decision based on my passing time at the southern point of Kerrera.

We have a healthy collection of 4m RIBs registered.
The target is Loch Tarbert only for many. If its too rough for the west side then we intend to alter to the east side - MacCormaig Isles, Craighouse KD etc. There are places like Crinan, Carsaig so there is no reason not to come and join us. Its a cruise in company event and skippers will decide relative to weather and experience nearer the time.

Puffin,

I just had one of those "D'oh" moments.

My "Use Dunstaffnage" theory was because of the atrocious fuel consumption of the car over the hills to Easdale. You are the "right side" of those hills, and I hadn't realised how far down the sound you are... (Thus almost allowing me to do the whole trip on what I can carrry. D'staf would mean borrowing yet another tank.....

Whats your launch / recover / park fee? (It's the one thing I can't find on your price list!) And are the showers open "after hours"? (I'll be recovering sometime on Saturday evening after the food).

My Forum name Puffin relates to the name of our RIB "Puffin" chosen by our two daughters. No connection to the Puffin divers I'm afraid! From personal experience however I would launch at Dunstafnage, its a wide and easy slipway with plenty parking and last time I checked their costs seemed reasonable.

I personally restrict going through under the bridge over the Atlantic to an hour or so either side of high water, the top end starts to get a little shallow before or after that. Others with more bottle than me may say differently!

I think they charged me £8 last summer for launch/recovery.Not sure about showers.Its still a fair run down to Easdale from Puffin divers.

Last time at the marina I was charged £18. I assume that's the Puffin Price?

Agreed it's still a fair run from Puffin, but it's almost half the trip form Dunstaff, and the road is much flatter - it's the hills that kill the car's MPG.

The high level idea was to get off the road and into the boat ASAP!

I did at one point toy with using Taynuilt, but low tide recovery gets interesting in the absense of a 4x4......

Why don't you come via Lochgilphead and maybe use ardfern, loch melfort or crobh?

I attack the west coast Via Crianlarich along the A85 & can get to Oban in ~ 2 hrs, Citylink & assorted 40 tonners permitting. Heading that way adds a fair bit of time to the tow. (if I do the "coast road" I might as well chuck it in at Easdale)

....and thre R&BT hasn't had a lansdslide for a while, so one must be iminent!

In the course of my inquiries, I have given the hotels in Port Askaig and Craighouse a headsup regarding demand for fuel. Ribbers take note that there is a wedding being held in the Jura Hotel on Saturday but food/drink/fuel will still be available. Port Askaig open and expecting a few ribbers...

OK, Arrival plan finalised.

Will be launching at Puffin Unless the weather is totally sh!te, in which case will launch at Easdale simply to stand half a chance of keeping the sleeping bag dry.

So, any Friday afternoon launchers- there's a possible precipitation permitting cruise in company for 20 mins or so!

Failing that, see you all in the pub!

What time do you reckon you will be dunking?

We are planning heading home each night back to the Fort by pickup and leaving the boat at Easdale, we were thinking about steaming all the way from the Fort but if we have a problem/breakdown we have no way of getting back, also the pickup is handy for storing fuel and kit.

Nah we've spent millions opening up the old road as a temporary relief road if there is another landslide. As a result there will be no more landslides.

Il maybe stay the Saturday night, it'll probably be detox though, I've nearly drunk Jersey dry of Bombay Saphire this week! Fishing was cancelled today so went for some liquid refreshments.

Right now "afternoon" is the best I can come up with, although realistically not before 2:30, probably nearer 4...

Meander back Sat eve "after the food / banter".

As you can see split second timing will be top priority for my weekend!

RIBs have already started arriving for ERR 2013. Bex at the Seafari Ticket Office was taken rather by surprise. Better to be 7 days early rather than 7 minutes late. We have had a blustery day today (Monday) but things are looking to pick up. As we have watched the long range forecast it has shown everything from Force 2 and blue sky to Force 6 and snow showers for this coming Saturday. Long range forecasts are difficult to interpret however things appear to be settling down and if I take a personal view ( and there is still 5 days to go) I believe Friday may not be the greatest day. The wind will be dying through the day but the rain has to go through first. From late Friday the wind will drop with Saturday perhaps overcast to start but winds light. Sunday is to be a blue sky day.
Where we are fortunate, assuming the forecast is correct, is that the winds Thurs and Friday will be from the N/NE so this means the sea will flatten. Whilst there may be a bit of residual swell on the way down to Loch Tarbert it will be fine inside the Loch.
Returning up from Craighouse should be relatively easy in these conditions.

I will update the weather on Wednesday when Ted will also send out final information update.

Here's to sunshine and calm seas.
