I was thinking about taking mine off to save weight on the way across, on the basis that it will be about as useful as a chocolate fire-guard 30 miles out!

Andy, phone your insurance back and explain to them that there are other boats accompanying you on the trip and that you have got other means of back up to engine failure e.g. towing equipment stored on board... like a rope and see what they say. Last thing you want is aux engine banging all over the place in the chop.

Don't fix it to the transom, strap it down in the bottom of the boat.

Agreed. They flap like a t**t in the rough.

If they don't state the power. Get a seagull or bath toy wind up one. It's an aux!

Could you class this as a RIB with axillary power source?

That would work well, cos B.S. is full of Hot Air.

Thought id better ring my insurance to see what theyd got to say to me. They didnt say yes or no to if i was covered, they didnt seem to like the fact that i hadnt got another adult on board with me as my son is a minor. Also if i lost the group!! i would have to navigate and drive myself as my son is not old enough to navigate!! If they do decide to cover me there will be a charge i have got to email them with all the details and they will give me a decision as wether i am insured or not.

Too young to navigate

Dame Ellen MacArthur sailed solo (so she had to sale and navigate on her own) around Britain when she was 17 - so how old do you have to be before you are old enough to navigate, as old as Uncle Albert?
