Good to try somewhere different so Wicklow still sounds best (and the IOM on Sunday of course)
It certainly was back in record time! My knees have only just recovered Dave

I'd be well up for it, though I think it's a bit ambitious in a 3.6m!

I'm sure we have a RIBnetter near "Wickla" who is in the know
My office is just 20 miles away from Wicklow. Not a place I usually go to as the main N11 goes right past .. But I could make a short trip down and have a look folks. Then I'd love to take the boat down and meet up when you all come over.

I'll let you know what I think .....

I would love to do this with you guy's but to be honest, I don't think that I have got the experience or boat set up for this kind of trip. Two 20 ltr portable tanks under the consul seat = 40 ltrs another three 20 ltr containers strapped to the rear = 100 ltrs which should be enough for the crossing, but if it gets rough, I don't really want to be filling up my under seat tanks by hand. For the rest of you guy's this should be a great experience and adventure for you all

kerny, to be honest carrying enough fuel would be my only concern too, our tanks only holds 120ltrs, which should be plenty, but as you say if it gets rough refilling the tank
what about running to bardsey with those making the crossing, & then back to caernarfon for those who don't want to make the run across, at least gives people a chance of a good run and a better idea of how far they can travel on the fuel capacity, maybe a stop at ty coch on the way home for a sherbert

Hi all,

I would be up for joining you on this trip as I am sure dad would too.

I remember the trip with the Pwllheli crew for a burger on Arklow, was a good day back in around Aug / Sept 2007.

I was a support boat for one of the welsh rowing crews that did the celtic challenge must have been 2010 (Can't remember now). Was a great experience but definatly hard work, we were up and working for 24hrs ferrying crew from the support yacht to the rowing boat every hour and following the rowing boat closely ato provide encouragement.

As some have mentioned over and back in a day has been the way it has been done in the past but there is nothing like change to keep it interesting. As for fuel, on our last trip from Black rock sands to Arklow (circa 90Nm) we took full main tank of 90L, and 3 protable tanks of 25L each. We had water in one of the tanks which was usless, and used around 75L one way just as an idea for others think of the trip but woried about how much fuel they would use (5.5m boat 90Opti and 2 up with weekend kit.
We averaged around 20-25kts and it was not a smooth crossing so a fair amount of time was spent adjusting the throttle.

Fuel will deffo be a problem for some of us, but surely manageable? I carry a 40l and a 25l tank so I expect to have to stop to pop some more in at some point.

My thoughts re this are,

1. If the forecast is rough its probably not happening on a 5M boat
2. If the forecast is ok ish, I will know after approx 20 miles I'll need to stop and put another 20 litres in the tank, this will give me the range as that will be 85 litres total
3. If after 20 miles or so, its rough and there is no way of safely fuelling I'll abandon the trip and come back, safe in the knowledge that I will have approx 45L left to do it.

Kerny I reckon we can work out something similar for you, or you are more than welcome to hop aboard and helm for a while with us.

all sounds like a great plan to me, as you say if it ain't fit to refuel it probably ain't fit to be there
