Good to see you guys planning something like this. I'm sure that RIBnetters this side of the pond will show some tangible form of support. I will not forget the excellent welcome/assistance we got in the IOM, for example...

A couple of thoughts in no order are:

It would be nice if you could stop over, it enhances the experience and gives crews a chance to R&R. Plus you have no pressure on the return leg, returning earlier in the day, soberish Weather forecasting is good enough now to give you a secure 36 hour window.. The fact is on a trip like that you have to be ready for the unexpected anyway, many's the boat got left behind...

You can forecast fairly well for wind, but fog is another matter and would be a likely one for you to encounter. You are all big boys and far be it from me to tell any of you how to do a day like that, but I would be thinking along these lines if I was the "organiser" (remember, if anything goes wrong, someone will want to interview the "organiser").

1. Passage plan it and run through the plan at a skipper's meeting before the depart.

2. Marshall it - List boats and PAX, coordinate comms, if there are more than 2-3 boats, designate a lead and sweeper boat - especially if you do decide to run in pairs. I don't like pairs, btw - too easy for them to get separated and there's no backup plan. The last pair, the slow/shaky/tired pair, will be alone...

3. Talk to the Irish CG, they're not overworked and will take an active interest in your crossing, especially if you are a biggish group of small boats. They'll hear your group comms.... I'd phone them and file a TR on the morning. They'll see you right.

If there was enough beer in it for me, I could be induced to deploy a 110 and jerry cans to Wicklow.

That pub looks like a dump, does anyone deffo know it to be otherwise?

Can't let Chris & Dean get all the tall tails about crossing the Irish Sea.

Count us in

Stop over for us will probably depend on the availability of accommodation especially if we're going for a short notice trip (the Mrs is not keen on tents, having said that she is not that keen about ribs either!)

Hmmmm. On a point from willk, anyone got AIS or radar reflectors?

No, and I have no knowledge of the one you guys are looking at, hence my question. I had a look at it on Google Earth and it doesn't LOOK great, but that's just me Spidey Senses. If I had to guess, I'd say it was a busy local "Nitelife" kinda place - all good if that's what you want. I'll make Enquiries for you, if you like. I'm sure we have a RIBnetter near "Wickla" who is in the know

Don't suppose it needs be Wicklow, anywhere on that strip of coast, or if not I'd still love to do IOM.

Not hijack thread to go elsewhere, just want destination to be worth it.

Just checked, as of May 2011, The Bridge Tavern was Not Trading. I don't know the current status. I've not been to Wicklow Town, and I'm not knocking it.

BTW, Arklow is an obvious alternative

TT, any thoughts? How about IOM instead, there must be a nice bay/harbour/pub there?!

AIS is next on my list, I have an Echomax "dustbin" & SeaMe already.

PS I'd be up for IOM but not on TT week

Agreed, whilst I'd like to see TT (not Tony t) it would be so busy. I fancy IOM then, so where's best to go to on the coast to moor up for a couple of beers, a bite to eat and a ribnatter?

However TT himself started the thread, best wait to get his view once he logs on after putting his black shadow on. Evidently he has to put it on instead of his wolves top to log on or he just cant get his head in the right space!

No, I said I didn't know Wicklow, and I don't. There are nice pubs everywhere, this I do know. Except Lerwick, which is a shit hole

you don't know how lucky you are, if you kept that rib of yours in the wet stuff a bit more I'm sure your v.much better half would be all smiles

how about doing both, Wicklow on the saturday, then back across to IOM & then home to Caernarfon on the Sunday

Ireland it is for me mate maybe IOM another day i have wanted to do a trip to Ireland for a long time Arklow would be better option for me from Aberdovey being west Wales but thought Wicklow would be better if we started from North Wales

willk thanks for your thoughts and input on the cruise i,m always ready for some good advice any info you can find on Wicklow would be very helpful thanks, the Bridge Tavern looked handy just a short walk from the harbour wall, you never know it may be open again by July

For those that want to stay over not sure if there is a lot of accommodation available being a small town. There is a hotel in Wicklow called the Grand Hotel looks a nice place just a short walk from the harbour.Maybe it might be better then to pick a specific weekend and take a chance on the weather so that those who want to stay over have time to book a room so how does the 14th July sound to everyone ?

I,m with willk ref a lead boat and sweeper i,m not keen on pairing up either its far better to keep eye contact if possible, for those that want a blast around and jump a few waves
i,m sure they will manage to find time to do both, as Paul says on the morfa nefyn run on the way back everyone just left leaving a few smaller boats behind, me and paul stayed till last and escorted a couple of smaller ribs back i know it was only 20 miles but they were thankful we did. This is my thoughts only maybe others may think different i,m not a leader, captain,or a member of Parliament just a fellow ribster that suggested a trip to Ireland

:quote: Patches sounds good lets hope it all comes together be good to meet fellow ribsters from over the water

doesn't seem to be much in it from aberdovey or caernarfon, we could just start from wherever suits best, meet at bardsey, and all run together to wicklow/arklow, as long as theres a few in each group for looking after each other

Went to Arklow a couple of years back with Jono and the Pwllheli gang (theres an old thread on here somewhere and quite a few pics - dead flat day and we all crossed in record time).

We had some help from the Arklow sailing club, who have a good set up in the inner harbour. Nice enough town, but was getting a little run down.

Good to try somewhere different so Wicklow still sounds best (and the IOM on Sunday of course)
