Draft and tide will dictate how far you get up the river but you should head under 6 at least

East Link Toll bridge
Samuel Beckett Bridge
Sean O'Casey bridge and the
Matt Talbot bridge for sure.

You will then have the loopline tail viaduct with Butt bridge a few yards after it.

Then it gets tricky - The Marlborough Street bridge is under construction at the moment and the head room looks tight.

If you get under that you have

O'Connell bridge
the Ha'penny bridge
Millennium walkway bridge
Grattan (Capel St. ) bridge and
O'Donovan bridge

If you make it to here you will head past the Four Courts, you won't miss it and well worth it.

Past that you have Fr. Matthew's bridge and Queen Street Bridge which is about as far as we made it last year. There are a few after that (James Joyce, O'More, Sherwin and Heuston bridges) before you get to the weir up at Islandbridge.

Phew... glad that primary school geography paid off!

Harbour Master Notice for Sunday July 7th

Folks,

The Harbour master has issued a warning for Sunday regarding a sea swim for charity that is taking place.

The swim is from the Bull wall ( the south wall of Dublin port ) to Dun Laoghaire Harbour. Traditionally this swim has ended the base of the outside of the west pier at a point known as windsurfers pier. However the notice says it will finish in the harbour so I'm trying to find out more.

The picture below gives the approx route if they head for Windsurfers pier with A being the usual starting point on the South Wall and B being the Windsurfers pier end.

The swim is about 6km and given they are expecting a finish at 2pm I would imagine, from experience, the start will be 11am or so. It's a good swim across some choppy water for a swimmer given the change in channel etc.

The notice from the harbour master is

"All harbour users are directed to keep clear of the swimmers; this includes both watercraft and shoreside rod fishermen

Additionally boats moored in the East Bight are requested not to operate their engines."

This would suggest that the swimmers would be coming into the harbour and finishing over by the slip beside the RNLI at the base of the east pier which would cut across the harbour mouth.

That would obviously have an impact on movements in the harbour and your ability to leave when you might like to!

I have asked for more info on it and will see what I get but it might mean an early'ish start and get out of the harbour before ye head for home ( past any other landmarks you might like! )

Weather's broken through here in Liverpool. Looking out from 14th floor of the Plaza over the mouth of the Mersey towards paddy land and its clear blue and flat calm!

Hope it stays that way for you.
