Bournemouth Air Festival

Where is the best place to view the display from the water ? Anyone know where the red arrows reference point would be on the land (where they line up to fly over so your in the flight path from the water) ?

There will be a large rectangle of water front bouyed off and patrolled to stop muppets going in.

On the cliff will be a large red cross, they will mark the mid point of the display box for the aircrews and is a good place to aline your RIB. However so does everyone else, so it will be busy. Be very prepared to fend off loads of other boats, as the attempts to anchor properly has to be seen to be believed! Even saw some SIBs last year trying to anchor with a sea achour and they could not under stand why they were still drifting ....

We are running daily trips for the whole show so will see you out there

Steve

Somewhere near the end Pier - Poole-side. That's where I was last year and got a great view.

I have been for the last 2 years - the positions are clearly marked by buoys - the rest is easy - just look where the other boats are anchored. You will get a great view whatever.

Will be on our way back from West Country on Sunday so will hopefully pass by as the Red Arrows do their thing.

Does anyone have a plan of the no-go area, or know where I can find one? I am trying to understand what beaches I will be able to get to to pick up passengers.

You can pick plans up in and around Poole, but that might not help you now.

Basically, you will be able to use beaches to the West of Bournemouth Pier and to the East of Boscombe Pier.

Regards
Steve

You should also be aware of the local byelaws when picking up from Bournemouth beaches: http://www.bournemouth.gov.uk/Visito...watercraft.asp

We're hoping to be out spectating over the week-end so hope to see you (although cloud/rain is looking somewhat unsettled at the moment).

This is the best schedule available online:

http://www.bournemouthair.co.uk/whats-on/schedule/

The brochure (which costs) may have more detail but I've not seen it.

The brochure is very vague on timings. i am hoping to be out sunday but the weather is not looking good.

if i do go I'll be just east of boscombe pier next to/off a big princess.

one thing to watch for if picking up from the beach is the breaking waves, we swamped a jet rib tender last year.

Yes, aware of the regs thanks; just common sense really.
Keeping an eye on the forecasts and hoping my mutinous crew do not decide that home is the better option again

We popped over to Boscombe today (in the car) in the hope of seeing some planes. Really low cloud so everything was cancelled - so here are a few photos of the sea.
Felt sorry for the holidaymakers with the rubbish weather.
Cheers
Neil

I can see us swamping the jet tender/rib again tomorrow !To be fair it kept going 4 up & full of water last year ! Thats if we even get it to the beach the right way up !

I dont fancy anchoring my RIB in the swell either ...

It was very nasty today, could not even see Brownsea Island from Poole Quay at times. There was no way the flying was going to happen as the minimum cloud base required is 1000' and it was less than 400' at times.

We had a full boat for the show, but phoned the customers to warn them, 7 wanted to go out anyway, so went down the Jurassic Coast. Whilst in no way smooth (4m waves at times) they all agreed it was better than the air show, so happy (wet) faces all round.

Yesterday as well as today, the swell was horrible. Considering that last year some 6000 boats were in attendence, when we had a look ther were some 11 boats around, most of which were the bigger boats operating out of Poole. Feel very sorry for the organisers. Bloody weather ...

Forcast better for tomorrow, but if I have learnt one thing from running the business this year, is not to trust the forcast and see what turns up on the day! See you all out there tomorrow.

Steve

PS the pictures make it look alot better than it was ..

The weather has been awful, most flying was cancelled on Saturday. I did anchor on Friday and Thursday when some flying did occur, it wasn't pleasant especially trying to get the anchor up single handed, had to motor over the top of it and leg it to the bow to pull it up in stages. The f16 was awesome. The best place to view from would be in line with the rad banner on the cliff and near the start of the exclusion zone, some planes will fly low level directly overhead, thought my ears were going to get damaged when the f16 went over on after burn. The programme you can buy isn't worth it very vague on times. Checkout Bournemouth weather.co.ok they have cloud ceiling info, if below 1000ft I doubt much will be flying today.

I did go Saturday and found drifting instead of anchoring was fineness long as you keepnanneye out of your position and can restart your engine ok, most waves were ok butndepends upon size of boat as drifting will put your rib horizontal to the waves so not ideal if swamping is an issue.

Bloody awful weather again today, except for a couple of early flights, the rest of the show was cancelled. We hung around until just after 3 and then customers had had enough so went for a blast to Old Harry.

Having said all that, we had a whole boat booking at 1700 when weather had closed in even more, such that the Jurassic Coast cliffs were just clear of cloud, it made for an amazingly atmospheric and wet trip which the customers loved. It is so difficult to know what a typical customer will enjoy.

Yep - miserable out there. I ended up with my wetsuit on as it seemed more suited to the conditions!

Never mind at least we got out on the water.....

Yes, I was there, for what it was worth. One aerobatic formation and two helicopters doing a fly past, and that was it. Like most I waited until about 3.00 when I heard that all further flying had been cancelled. Pleasant enough run home, if a little wet
Really feel for the organisers; hope they try again next year.
