He's almost home!

For those who don't know, Avocet is the one in the Ribcraft on the banner at the top of our forum .......

Made it safely to Dartmouth and got the last room at the Royal Castle Hotel (posh or what for the last night!). Flattest open sea ever up to Eddystone but then confused seas from every direction until Start Point. After that, a happy run in and final refuel (£1.95/litre!) for tomorrow when I'll be able to see the relaxed posts. Thanks to those who have sent texts of good wishes/jealousy! :-)

26 - 27 - 28 are you guys and gals doing the isle of scilly ,where are you meeting , launching , camping , as this humber is shouting to go down there the guys thats towing from caernarfon and chester [GIDDYUP] give a shout so we can plan something to leave together or at least be on the same road just a precaution

Finally home and can post in my own right! Thanks to Alex for the relays. Gearbox remains intact (a first after such a long trip!). Sea state out of Dartmouth this morning very scary! (Six squeals from Mrs A before we got past the harbour entrance). Once at sea, we thought about heading back with head on waves above the height of the boat keeping us off the plane and the GPS predicting a 2.5hr crossing to Portland. We decided to try looping inside Lyme Bay first, however and after about 20mins heading more North than we wanted the sea started to calm (wave reach only coming from Portland rather than from right down the Channel). Eventually our speed built up and were able to steer more easterly and eventually for The Bill. Stopped off in Weymouth for a late lunch and then back to Poole after diverting around the firing ranges off Lulworth (firing cancelled as we were making the detour). Peveril Ledge also unusually choppy (two squeals from Mrs A!).

Sorry that nobody else could join us but thanks for all the support received en route (and, yes: the Betty Stoggs was in the Chainlocker!) It was a great trip and with only about three hours boating per day (albeit sometimes tough!) perfectly doable with a bit of planning by an aging unfit couple (well, I speak for myself anyway). Will add tips learned to the thread for the trip at the end of July but I'm now going to pour myself a well earned beer .....

The seas in the range out of Dartmouth can be very - and surprisingly - nasty. Shame you had a bit of a rough ride on the last leg home.

No reason why a 5m+ ribcraft & 100hp engine shouldn't happily make the trip. Pick your weather & your friends & go for it

No prob at all.

It's the 50/60hp rigs that struggle with maintaining cruising speeds.

Remember, it was bot so long ago that 100hp was considered a biggy.

Agreed running to Isles of Scilly in a 5.3 is perfectly feasible. I was considering more Avocet's overall trip possible in a sub 6m boat, but far more comfortable in a longer hull plus the additional fuel capacity / storage the bigger boat affords for more than a day / overnight trip.
