That is a shame, I was really looking forward to seeing the boat and the Witch was keen to catch up with some other Kents.

I've visited a couple of times, and the welcome is always second to none. My mate tappie is keen to visit so we will probably just come over in a few weeks, we'll be sure to let you know.

Real shame.
Sorry you can't make it.
If you do it in a few weeks try and make it for the end of Alderney Week. The fireworks are well worth making the effort for.
- and thanks for letting us know

Tides and Timings for Friday and Sunday

For those intending / hoping to come along....
From my calculations (and do check them!)
The current flow on Friday 20th July is such that until about 12.30 the current flow in the channel is from West to East - then slack until about 13.00 and East to West from about 13.00.
Thus ideally we'll leave Yarmouth at just after midday and make an afternoon crossing (should be about 2 1/2 - 3 hours across).

For Sunday the current flow is West to East from about 7.00 to about 14.00.
I suggest those intending to return on Sunday aim to leave Alderney at about 10.30 - 11.00.

Last year I got impatient hanging around in Alderney in the morning waiting for the tide to turn for an afternoon departure and I wished I'd waited! 3.5 kts with you vs. 3.5 kts against you makes a big difference on your fuel usage!

I'm waiting for a longer forecast to see whether we (Blue Ray) are staying on to carry on down to the other Channel Islands for a few days or coming back on Sunday. Monday's showing a 6, gusting 7-8 so if that carries on for a few days we'll be coming back on Sunday!

From the side of the ditch the tide will start to ebb (turn SW) at about 1130 on the 20th, wind forecast is currently very good.

Departing at 12/12:30 you will be arriving at the peak of the tidal flow and just before low water.

The forecast is holding! Looks very good indeed, for those who have/working boats.

An update on the camping option...
Saye Campsite (Welcome to www.sayebeachcampsite.com) is now under new management and are willing to rent out their tents on a nightly basis (it used to be a week minimum hire).
They usually kit the tents out for families based on supplying everything, but as it's the beginning of the season and most tents aren't up yet, if anyone wants to rent just a "bare tent" they are willing to let us at a reduced rate.
If the weather's good and you have a tent already, there's no benefit, but if the weather's bad it gives another option, especially if you were going to buy a tent specially!
Their number is 01481 822556

Well, we're now back from Turkey and, having checked the weather for Friday, the Met Office are forecasting 3mph NW winds and 19C (albeit with scattered showers) and WindGuru is predicting wave heights of less then a meter reducing to less then .5m by early next week. This sounds encouraging and Mrs A and I remain up for it (subject to me getting my hair cut tomorrow )

From a long trawl of the thread it looks as though the following are currently hoping to come:

Trevor G + 2 (or 3 if Baby Blue not completed) - Blue Ray - 8.6m
Avocet + 1 - Grimalkin - 7.5m
Whisper - Madness - 5.85m
David Dodd - T-Zoe - 5.85m
AJ + 2 - ? - 5.85m

TBC
Rick G - Baby Blue 4.7m
Longjohn - Seadrive - 4.7m

Confirmation still awaited from the TBCs and Paul Cannell (who seems to have booked a hotel without a boat: we have room on Grimalkin if required as I am sure do others!). Also the number of pax for T-Zoe and the name of AJ's boat (useful for VHF comms!) would be good.

May I suggest an RV at Yarmouth at 11.30 to give time to refuel before setting off at 12.00. VHF Ch08?

Anyone that wants my mob phone who doesn't already have it, please PM me with theirs (and their real name if not obvious!) and I'll reply with mine.

Looking forward to Friday and meeting those of you that I do not already know.

David

Sounds like you will have a brilliant time. Fingers crossed that the weather holds for the whole weekend. If anyone experienced (another boat or two) is considering leaving on Saturday to join the group I could be interested subject to the usual caveats!
