Surely they couldn't? RNLI crew don't carry personal VHFs OR PLBs. They just have a single shot flare on their belts. This is by no means the first time this has happened to them and on one occasion the crew were fortunate to be rescued after quite some time in the water. That said, they have to train. In Ireland they have to report in every 15 minutes to the CG on VHF.

Right - I've had some complaints about this thread. I really don't understand why it created such response. I have edited one post that overstepped the mark a little. However I'm not going to rewrite history or remove posts where people have questioned the wisdom of others - this is a discussion forum, anyone who posts here is inviting other members to discuss it with them not simply to agree with them.

There are almost certainly useful lessons for a lot of people here:

- recovering the boat was easier than I expected
- understanding the dynamics of the capsize would be interesting
- learning how to avoid your outboard dying in difficult seas would be useful
- considering what can be learned, even from your armchair, about how to respond (e.g. I think a polite, non-distress call to the CG might have been wise and would have saved time if it had suddenly deteriorated, but might also have prevented any distant observer who called it in launching a helo).

This is not the first time someone has capsized on ribnet, but it might be the first time the whole process including capsize and recovery has been captured on video for everyone else to share - can the whole community not benefit from that? I'm sure those involved are big enough to deal with some gentle banter, and perhaps learn from the discussion.

Looks like you all had a good laugh and managed to sort your selves out just fine!
But I’m surprised that Mat has not managed to do this before now as the wave jumping and wheelies he pulls end up with stern and out board landing first which sooner or later end up with a stalled engine which isn’t good in these conditions as the capsize shows.
I have called in an capsize on the bar in Salcombe to the coast guard before now and they sent out the life boat which towed them in upside down making no attempt to right the rib.
I also know someone who liked to pulling wheelies in a large Boston whaler, he ended up submerging the nice Yamie 4st on the back ending in a engine rebuild and it wasn’t even his!!

People do lots of pointless things in there lives some with more risk than others, well what is the point in jumping out of a plane or climbing up a mountain?

I'm not sure that quite stacks up, I think most Ribnet members know the people who were present are not the type of people to ridicule others. In fact quite respectful to others on Ribnet but do give gentle banter to the ones we know on a personal level.

I do not have a problem with people passing comment to provoke a well constructed debate I do have a problem with those who just provoke for the hell of it.

Ok, i dont post here much any more for a number of reasons (not least i dont currently have a rib) but for whatever reason i did (and still do) feel this was an accident waiting to happen.

I am of course delighted that you managed to sort yourselves out with:

A) no physcal harm to anyone involved
B) no need to call out any other services (and therefore no physical harm to them either)
C) no damage to anyone elses property (other than prehaps the boat involved)

I do know that area of water well and whist the camera does flatten the sea, based on what i saw, it must have been quite lively there at the time! i guess the footage of the recovery (which is very intersting and well done!) is after the boat had drited out of the "race" hence why it looks much calmer.

I was coming through there in a 50 ft semi displacement motor boat a few weeks ago and we watched a 40 something ft sailing boat come VERY close to broaching in the breakers at the same spot. it is NOT a place to be taken lightly.

I absolutly agree that the each skipper is responsible for the safety of their crew and craft and in that respect, if someone wants to go play in the breaking waves its their call. Personally its not my bag and i wouldnt but then im getting on in years and dont want to leave my fiancee and two dogs without a family but thats my choice.

Was the video a demonstration of good boat handling in rough conditions? i suspect not or we wouldnt be disussing it in this light now. (and before we get onto the point "the engine stalled and lost 90% of its power" we should ask why, and what put it in that position in the first place... less than perfect boat handling resulting in swamping the engine..

Im 100% sure the people involved here didnt set out to flip the rib and its clear their actions post event were considered and appropriate. (less prehaps calling CG to tell them someone was going into the water under an upturned boat, personally i would have called it in but thats prehaps me being too cautious)

We all make mistakes, in my mind, being in that position in the first place would be a mistake for me but in the eyes of the skippers here, it wasnt. they have to live by their decisions and i am sure they are quite happy to do so despite my view and prehaps those of others.

Hmmm- I think a lot of the worldwide population would regard all extreme sports as dicking about ?

Skateboarding - dicking about on wheels
Boat racing - dicking about on water
Diving - dicking about under water
Skydiving - dicking about in the air
Aircraft racing - dicking about in planes
Bike racing - dicking about on bikes

It might even be able to (heavens forbid) be learned from - that a 4.7m rib can be righted - lifejackets work , killcords work, and that unless secured with a lanyard your handheld may sink....

The boat was towed upside down (with Matt safely on Grimalkin) even further from where it had drifted to a relatively flat bit of sea before any attempt to right it was made.

Well I can guarantee he's had an experience that none of you posters has had, there is more or less only two ways to learn how to drive a boat, his way will produce a good boat driver if he doesn't kill himself first. If he learns from this he will have an insight that none of us has
