2 days on sth coast - any suggestions?

Anybody have any suggestions for a place on the south coast where I can take in a refresher course of some sort (Like L2 +) whilst the family go shopping and are generally entertained on shore? Maybe get them out depending on the weather. Plan to stay somewhere for a couple of days with an Hotel overnight stay during half term in Feb. Will need boat parking too.

Thanks

Rich

I would recommend Powerboat Training UK. It’s run by Paul Glatzel who posts here. They are based at Cobbs Quay marina in Poole. I did my Advanced PB with them last year and had a great time.

If you’re taking your boat then Poole is a pretty good place to go boating. Plus i'm sure there is enough stuff on land to keep the family entertained for a while.

Alternatively, you could leave the mainland and head over to the Isle of Wight. Did my PB 2 and ICC with Dave Robson of Aquapower (currently providing safety boat cover at the London Boat Show) and Richard did Advanced with him. He's based in Yarmouth and there's loads to do on the island - beaches, walks, zoo, funfair etc if the weather's good and indoor attractions too. The island's tourism site is here .

You could save the ferry fare and take your own boat over - launch from Lymington/Calshot or similar and take an easy ride over the Solent to Yarmouth - really friendly & helpful harbour staff who can usually find you a berth.

Wherever you go, hope you & your family have a great time.

Hi Rich,
I run the sort of update courses that you are talking about.
Have you heard about the new RYA Intermediate Powerboat course?

If you would like some more information please drop me a line.

Thanks

Thanks all. Very interested in all suggestions. Actually I'll be reaching the grand age of f..ff.f....f.f..orty at that time so I figured this is a good excuse to spend a couple of days doing what I want to do whilst the kids enjoy themselves in a seaside town somewhere, stay in a hotel and have a nice evening meal etc.

Unfortunately, Isle of White is probably not practical thanks Louise, since I could do with the training before crossing the Solent! Otherwise sounds great.

Any more ideas? Nice Hotels?

Rich

I'm pretty sure Dave is willing to meet people at Lymington in his boat so you could either base the family there and meet up with Dave there using his boat for the course or you could see if he would chaperone you across the Solent and then do the course on either his boat or your own.

Alternatively, take the ferry over.

Thanks Louise, food for thought.

Something else to think about...

There are lots of enthusiastic RIBbers down there and I'm sure someone would be happy to escort you across in your own boat if you fancied the idea. Depending on when you go and Richard's work commitments we could escort you.

OK. I'll shut up now!!

Hi David,

Of course I don't!!

Obviously I can only go on my own experience - and to be fair to yourself & Paul, I can say that both Poole & Brixham are beautiful places to visit with lots to see and do and both offer ideal powerboat training grounds, IMHO. I have visited both as a tourist and lived for 12 years in South Devon.

So, in conclusion, Rich L wherever you decide to go I'm sure your family will have a great time and you'll have an even better time!!

Sorry - is that better now? If anyone calls you a Southern Wuss you tell me and I'll sort 'em out.

There's no stigma in taking the RIB on the IOW ferry - did it last year. Saves all the angst in not being able to get back when the weather closed in as it did the year before.

Mind you felt a bit of a pillock getting a coffee & danish in full dry suit - got some very nervous glances from the other passengers - kept being asked "did I know something they didn't"

Yep

(Rich - sorry for digressing from the theme of your original post. Would be happy to accompany you across to Yarmouth if need be. Will be booking a course for my Scurvy Crew shortly to be taken in our boat - could split the cost if interested. PM for further details.)
