Ribcraft 585 - Evinrude Ficht 150 - Fareham, Hampshire - 17 September 2008

Our Ribcraft 585 was stolen from Fareham marina this morning. It is on a Roller Coaster Trailer. The rib is white hull and has black tubes. Ribcraft and Evinrude have been given the serial numbers.

The rib has a white console cover and has Lowrance GPS and Depth. An ICOM radio is fitted.

There is a Ribcraft A-Frame with flag staff and twin VHF aerials. It has two double jockey seats and a bench seat in the back.

The starboard nav light is broken and the port one is taped up with red adhesive tape.

Please keep a look out!

I will post some pictures later today.

I'll keep a good look out on land & at sea. I wish the police could just stop any RIB seen being towed anywahere to check it out when they get a report of this sort of thing.

I dont think I know anyone who wouldn't be happy to spend 5 mins speaking to the police if it meant they helped get someones boat back.

Ironically, last time I towed it down to Cornwall, I was stopped and asked if it was mine! I didn't mind at all.

Great idea, but do they really have the time?

I understand there is a problem around Southamhton at the moment, so be careful.

That's the second RIB that has been stolen from Fairweathers/Fareham Marina

Was it being serviced?

Yes, it was having some work done on the engine.

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are having Tony.

Lee needs to be careful.

There is now no way I'd take my boat there for servicing if it needed to be left overnight.

Not just overnight. When I was there 6 weeks ago, I suggested I put the wheel clamp on for the insurance. I was asked not to as they wanted to move the RIB after the service, I would have given keys etc for removal! I did install the hitch lock however.

If it gets left for servicing in the future, I'll insist it gets put on.

Ours had two wheel clamps and the engine was lowered over the back wall!

I think the bottom line is that RIBS on trailers are very vulnerable!

I've had the same experience as Hightower at Fairweather. I took Evolution up there a few months ago for a spot of work. I rang them at the end of the day to see if the work was done - it was (nice of them to inform me

). When I got there at about 6pm the rib was sat in their carpark with no lock on it at all. Disgraceful in my opinion. (They didn't even manage to fix the problem either.)

I was chatting to the Police on one of their patrol boats at the SBS on Saturday - transpires over 50% of recent shouts have been on boat thefts (trailered) or theft from moored boats.

They have 3 patrol boats to cover all of Soton Water/Solent and 12m offshore south of IOW - talk about thinly spread....

They have launched 'Operation Kraken' a sort of wet neighborhood watch that is under their Anti-Terrorist banner.

This means a suspected thief can be legitimately slotted at 400m.....

I'm all for slotting terrorists or just plain thieves at any range ,but it is hard to tell who owns a boat. I see people who look like they shouldn't be allowed out , let alone near water and engines and definately not at the same time , but they own big expensive boats. One bayliner owner near me comes to mind. But hey I looked like I had nicked the boat when I ran out of gas - just glad no-one slotted me . ( Christchurch harbour patrol was no where to be seen as usual !) But I did see that dorset police have leased 2 ribs from the RNLI ( I assume older ILBs taken out of servoce , but essentailly still very good boats)

I cant find the link ,but should be a step in the right direction , as long as it lasts. You compare us to the states where you have 'proper' water policing & the UK is shocking.

I'm sure we all know people who have had theft / damage if we haven't ourselves - personally I'm all for chopping of hands - a pretty good deterant , even its against thier poor old 'human rights' !

I also spoke with the marine police at the Boat Show and they stated they are not finding any nicked boats, the Avon taken just over two weeks ago was on a mooring in The Hamble by the owners house but it appears they stole a trailer in the area and pulled the boat to the shore to cut the chain and lock by dragging the mooring. Sorry if it sounds negative but the police gave me a feeling boats are nicked in our area and disappear. Hope the police are wrong and you get the boat back soon. not a good advert if a boat goes whilst at a service.

Just to close the loop, the boat has been recovered. It turned up in Sussex and by a combination of pure chance and brilliant policing, those responsible for the theft of Mistoffelees and some other boats have been arrested.

The state it was in was dire. it has probably been allowed to fill with water. Not sure how the batteries and oil tank have faired yet!

Pleased to hear they have found your RIB and arrested the scum, only thing is, at best they will get a slap wrist.
