Tug and Barge Races on the River Thames

Hi guys and gals.

Got some photos of the races on the Thames today. Turn out was very low due to Thursdays terrorist attacks but it wan't gonna stop some people from going for a play!

We left Teddington Lock at 0600 to catch the tide and then followed the parade from the Observatory up to Westminster. Once the parade reached Westminster they then hitched up the barges to the tugs and raced back down to Westminster!

It wasn't class one powerboating but I'm sure the same amount of alcohol that the class oners drink in a week was consumed in day!!!

Only on certain stretches

"Below Wandsworth Bridge there is no limit but speeds should be relevent to local conditions and adjusted to ensure there is no damage to persons or property from excessive wash. It is unlikely that speeds in excess of 10 knots will be appropriate until in Sea Reach. Causing damage through excessive wash is an offence with a fine up to £2500. All PLA and Police boats are equipped with Radar Guns."

It is all down to the "excessive wash" - and as a RIB on the plane will produce less wash than at lower speeds...........

Just use common sense and watch out for rowers and house boats etc.

Just found a good user guide but seems to be mainly for the upper reaches - one interesting point - people have the right to anchor in the thames providing no obstruction is caused!!!
