Thanks Ian, Maybe in the spring, mate of mine in Pembroke has his new Rib on order for the spring so we might make a trip of it. Busy planning a trip to Iceland with the Landie and the Kayaks at the moment for early summer. Looked at taking the Rib but scary prices on that ferry ....

Looks great fun. Where do you launch from on the Tyne. What are the charges/parking facilities like? Can you just go up & down the river at will or do you need to communicate with anyone?

Red Fox,
we launch at Derwenthaugh marina which is about 500m east of Scotswood bridge (on the southern side). It's only 5 mins down the road from home so it's handy. It's also at one end of the unrestriced zone so it's handy for skiing etc. I think it's £8 per day or £100 for the year to launch there. There's a chandlery there as well and loads of parking. The slip is usually OK 3hrs either side of high tide but on neaps you can use it most of the day. I don't know of any other public slipways closer to the coast.
Upstream you can get within a mile of wylam on a high tide but that's a slow cruise at is is really shallow in places. At low tide you can almost walk across in places so watch out ! I kayak on that bit of the river at low tide which helps when keeping clear of the shallows.

There's no need to communicate your movements up and down the river outside the usual call to the coastguard if you are heading out to sea.
Hope this helps,
Bren

I must give it a go some time...the idea of being oroun the 'tall ships' in 2005 sounds good. Does the Derwenthaugh marina provide maps of the restricted zones? Are there pontoons for family to use when boarding? At this rate, Windermere doesn't sound so attractive for next year!
Thanks for the answers
Mark

Mark,
The unrestricted zone is from just east of the derwenthaugh marina down to the site of the old dunston powerstation (just west of the coast staithes). I think it's around 2.5 miles long. There are no pontoons, a few ladders down off the jetty wall and one set of steps down from the small staithes there.

One problem you do have, depending on the tides is driftwood in the river, the further upstream you are however, the less of a problem it is.

You can also ski up at Newburn. there is a ski club there and a nice ramp for club members only though.

The day launch stuff is run by Powerhouse marine who are based at the marina, 0191 4140065

launch ramps on the tyne

hello there fatboy(no offence) and red fox, just read the forum and thought i would tell you of a place in south shields to launch a boat, i use it all the time, the only problem is that it is getting popular with the jetski set on a sunday, any other time will be nice and quiet, it's at a place called littlehaven, and the south shields yacht club and local council use it, it's free but your supposed to have a parking permit, and to get one of those you need insurance, but that's not a problem because what you can do is launch your boat, and park in the nearby tourist car park it's only 30p perhour.the ramp it's self is located between the littlehaven hotel, and the jetty that the tyne pilot uses, you can't miss it. hope to see you there when the weather turns.

regards

Cheers seaskimmer, i'll have to take a look at this site on boatlaunch and when the ice melts...you never know. That sounds like two good sites at either end of the river.
