What I Learned

1. Wear gloves (and a hard-hat if your A-frame is "full size" like that one ).

2. Let the Hi-line discharge the helo's static to water or deck before you grab it.

3. Flake the weight and Hi-line into a container, deffo don't secure it to the boat (unless you have Quota for helos).

4. Keep the Hi-line taut as the dope-on-the-rope decends.

5. When in the lifting strop, keep your arms down and hands holding the strop (unless you want to audition as a USCG SAR Jumper).

6. Let the air-crew manhandle you into the helo - pretend to be a sack of spuds.

Looks like you had fun. Who's operating the Irish CG choppers now?

You'll end up with an un-happy winch man and a load of winch wire on your deck if they think its caught.
If it all goes wrong break away to starboard, if you disappear under the chopper you'll also end up with a cut winch wire on your deck!

i was told on a training course a good few years back that with some types of irish helicoters to check and see which side the winch is ,because some types of helicopters the irish s.a.r. have the door and winch is on the opposite side to normal ones,,port side ,,,, think it was a french make of helicopter ,,,,so the approach is the other way around and so is the break away in event of an engine loss,,,,,,,also before the run in ,,the pilot will brief you,, Dont fire rocket flares ,otherwise the pilot will go away ,,smokes flares ok if they ask for one and make sure that all loose gear is away or lashed down or anything else that could be sucked into the helicopters engine intakes ,

Yeah, that's all ancient history. That was the Alouettes and Dauphins the Air Corps used to use in SAR role. Then the lads in green got a bad dose of Industrial Action and we contracted the job to CHC.

Holy God lad, were you wearing a cork life preserver on that course?
