Pics From The Weekend-last outing for this year

Got out this weekend for some boating & deer hunting. It's been a mild fall, but at this point most of the calmer lakes in the are were icing over for about the 1st 1/4 mile from the shoreline. However the Winnipeg River, which is pretty turbulent was still quite open, but probably won't be much longer given the weather forecast for the next few days. By this time next week it will probably be iced up along the shores as well. In any case here are a few pictures;

More;

A) A little closer to Sturgeon Falls - These falls create 4-5' standing waves and can provide a pretty interesting ride going through them. A video would do them better justice.

B) Loading the boat on a flat deck trailer

C) Detail picture of the inflatable catamaran hull

D) The Military fuel canisters save alot of space and work flawlessly

Lovely photo's, I just love seeing people out boating in extreme weather conditions and whilst I know the photo's show only a little taster of how cold things get in your part of the world, it gives a great impression.

Is that camp semi permanent or just like a tent?

Thanks Andy. The camp is a canvas wall tent with stove that takes 3 guys about 3 hours to set up. These friends come up from eastern Ontario each year for 2 weeks of deer hunting, so the 3 hours of setup time is well worth it. The wood burning stove warms the place right up in no time, and provides temendous comfort at the end of a day of tramping through the bush.

With those falls in the pictures, a boat needs to be able to do at least 25 mph on calm flat water for it to get through them while going upstream.

Looks too damn cold for me. It sucks when your beer freezes.

What kind of depths do you have going over the high points on those falls? I'd be worried about eating props.

Typically, 3-7 feet depending on the the season and what the hydro dams are doing.

Very atmospheric photos. Winter is settling in for sure!

(Bit squeamish about the deer hunting tho', sorry.

Hypocritical of me I guess because I eat meat. )

Hi Pablo,

No, not yet but will be back out Friday and Saturday to hopefully fill the freezer. Once you taste venison, it's difficult to go back to beef (or tofu

).

Don't you hate packing it in for the season? I was out last Sunday on Lake Ontario. Squeezed in one dive but had the usual fall weather here... Small Craft Warnings, snow. We were out 3 miles and average seas were about 7' with a few 9' - 10'. They had a nice fetch down from the eastern end of the lake though, so they were just big rollers. My buddy opted not to dive given the current, opting to drink my entire thermos full of hot chocolate and Irish Creme instead!

Afterwards, we cruised up the Niagara Gorge which was pretty interesting. Unfortunately, I didn't have a camera...

Alas, the beast is packed away in storage now, and the skis are being waxed tomorrow!

Guess I have to say it...

2 dives today, scattered clouds, a bit of breeze in the morning, building to pretty stiff in the afternoon; Monterey Bay was as flat as I've ever seen it. Brown surface layer, opening up at 10' to about 25 to 30 foot vis. Got a little choppy in the afternoon, but could still run WOT (but it'd beat you up a bit.)

More tomorrow. And possibly next weekend.

For what it's worth, my vis on Sunday was better than yours. Lying on the bottom in 120', I could clearly see my boat silhouetted against the sun! Allowing for the angle of the anchor line, this had to have been 150' plus! On the downside, I saw one salmon and a bunch of zebra mussels... but a cool little schooner!

Gratuitous knife turner!

I was going to suggest that the snowmobiling must really suck in your neck of the woods - but then again the Mariposa/ Yosemite region is only a couple hours drive from you, isn't it?

It's about 3 hrs from here to Yosemite. Maybe 3.5 to the valley.

I've got a buddy who snowmobiles every year in Mariposa. Haven't heard too many people that know the town.

Stoo; if you do decide to head out to the left coast, let me know. We'll be diving every couple of weeks through the winter (weather permitting.) I can get you in in Monterey/Carmel; for the Channel Islands diving you'd be better off with one of the charter boats.
