Orkney to Norway 2014

Thought I would share with you the Papay Arctic Adventures 2014 trip from Orkney to Norway and back. We travelled over 2000miles in 29 days, living and sleeping the three of us aboard our Carson 750 Rib, called Quickstep. We got to just north of the Arctic Circle and are already planning our return hoping to reach further North.

That sounds like some trip. Any idea of how much fuel you used? Thanks for posting, It's a destination on my bucket list.

Cheers for that Siochair. We covered around 2100 and the trip cost (an eye watering) £7900 but that did include credit card charges and interest whilst away.
That got us about 5000 litres which works out about 2mpg. Not great but carburettor V8 engines are not known for being frugal.
We were often loaded with 2.5T of fuel, gear and food etc
probably 600 miles were not at our most economical 22 knots. Most of the crossing from Shetland to Norway (270 miles) was at 27 Knots.
We have a Faria fuel meter that gave litres per hour etc which proved very useful.

Thanks again Maximus for the kind words! And like Ive said before we cant wait to go again! Next time though I think it will only be two aboard as three living and sleeping aboard for 29 days was a wee bit cramped!

this shows how we slept 3... One bunk dropped in either side of the wheel house and the third person slept below with everything else!

I take it that shore side fuel was readily available. I would not fancy carrying that amount of go juice from a forecourt to the boat!

I could not agree more neil... But we were even more fortunate in getting fuel mostly paid for by a very generous friend of one of the crew.
We miss being there a lot!

And yes Boatnomad we had crazy weather. Over 30 degrees most of the time and mirror calm.
Thanks for the link... That is now our rib. Really glad I saw the ebay advert!

That glacier picture is incredible. There's a guy dwarfed in the foreground. Sounds like a fantastic trip.

You are observant!
The scale was amazing. It can be seen ( or at least the sun catching it) many miles out to sea. It was strange having the heat of the day and the presence of ice. On the less visited side of the glacier we cooled our bier in the ice! With all the breath taking scenery it was both lovely and unbelievable having the fjord to ourselves most of the time!

I must have been drinking so much 'bier' or have a strange spell check lol!
Will definitely try and visit Melfjord again. Want to take inflatable canoes next time too.
Hope to go again either next year or the year after. Really going to try for next year though. Would love to get further north and spend as long there as possible.
Nasty looking problem on that Suzuki! As Fjordrafting said back in 2007, Lofoten looks amazing. Likely will have a wee look on the way north!

this photo was taken at about 01:00 in Melfjord, just north of the arctic circle and we felt like the only folk in the world

A mile really didn't go by when there wasn't somewhere we wanted to stop and explore and most places we stopped at we could have spent weeks exploring. Honestly a life time wouldn't be enough time to see the west coast of Norway. So much to see and so little time! Also rarely did a mile go by when there wasn't a great anchorage or pontoon to stop for the night.

The difference being, unlike yourself, I do not consider it necessary to make a song a dance out of every outing or splash it's details all over this site.

How many Scillies trips did you make this year?
