I just had to keep changing gloves regularly (seriously). You don't need much anyway, just wipe it over the tubes. It is the tube protector (e.g. 3M or 303) that brings the deep colour back anyway.

Toluene is just a paint thinner; if used in a well ventilated area- no problem.
You do not even need gloves. Give your hands a good rub with hand cream. before and after use. Have used gallons of the stuff no problem.
