It's a 1983 two cylinder 50 Yamaha. They were de rated from 55hp to make way for the twin pot 60 which had a different mounting, block, electrics and gear ratio. The 50 is the better choice as you will never stick for spares.

Bit hairy at full chat , outboard trim pin is on second hole would dropping it to first hole help stability

Seriously quick, we reconed about 35/37 knots ,have to remember to take GPS next time mates were saying at times only prop in the water on flat water

when you say stability, do you mean you were chine walking? i.e side-side?
probably putting it in a hole would help yes.
the resident sr4 peeps will be able to advise better than me on what to try after that.
as you don't have PTT you'll just need to play with weight balance and fine tune that way i guess, shouldn't be a big deal though.
