More on the Floor at Redbay Boats

I called into Redbay today to collect my Kruger Beta

I was a little surprised to find the production floors a hive of frenetic activity. There were 11 and 12 meters in "fitout" for Jura and Islay and the laminating hall was taken up with a pair of 11 meters that are both for clients in Northern Ireland. In between all this were a few lesser vessels that largely escaped my attention. I really liked the heads on Sandy's new 12m. Access from the deck is a great idea - full standing room in there. There were a couple of used craft there also, being refurbed for resale. The market for large used diesel boats has taken off recently. Both were bound for the west coast of Scotland.

10s, 11s and 12s

So yeah, of course there were going to be more RIB photos

What I didn't fully appreciate when commenting above is that there has been a sudden and dramatic uptake in the company's services - more specifically for large bespoke commercial vessels (although the Southampton Show saw a few smaller leisure boats being ordered too).

Long term fans of Redbay will fondly remember the original 9.1m boats that morphed into the 11m hull, itself recently gaining a potential meter in a mould retool. These are wide hulls that can easily accommodate twin diesel installations, the extra meter in the 12m now enables the fitting of waterjets or allows more layout options for deck/cabin space in conventional outdrive fitouts.

Sandy's 12m (Venture West) has twin Yanmar 315s with outdrives and he has used the space for extra deck. There is another 12m finishing in the laminating hall for a current 11m owner - a private craft for long distance cruising. The other white 11m above will belong to Nichol McKinnon (Dances with Supertankers ) shortly.

If I've remembered correctly, there is another 10m+ in the mould at present adjusted for twin waterjets. That is destined for patrol work in Lough Neagh.

Sweet 16s

The photo of the 1650 prototype Pilot vessel beside our Callum's Cuchulainn reminds me of a wee rumour doing the rounds - to the effect that the company has secured a contract for a pair of similar vessels - Scania powered this time. The same wee bird suggested that voyagers to St Kilda might be enjoying passage on a third before too very long.

8s and 9s

The 1050 may be gone, but her offspring flourish and multiply. Port of London have another version in build. It has a completely bespoke cabin to keep the southern softies crews toasty. It looks huge now but 22" tubes will tone the bulk down a bit. It has a sensible large console for kit. The last pic is of a 9m in the mould.

One of them, I believe. The "twins" will replace a different type.
