I can understand your point of view if you are an off shore racer, however
I have done enough of it to know the difference. I have raced yachts within the sheltered bay in similar conditions in NEaster gale reflecting in peaks off cliffs on east of Ireland, but most of my sailing is off shore in most conditions up to f9.
With regard to your quote, you are still talking about racing be it around the world or not, and when around the world, the southern 40 and 50 parallels are well documented where a squall is a squall and will flattend a boat, and the term fierce is applied to these parallels(roaring fourties and fierce fifties).
However and for the most part, we are not in the southern ocean where with the rotation of earth and trade winds blow across three oceans unimpeeded (Pacific, S. Atlantic, Indian) where one of your clippers will regularly clock up 400 NMiles in 24 hours without raising a sweat, obviously running before trades from west to east.
Now turn around the cape (east west) in clipper and try beat into it for three weeks and make no ground!!!!
In any event, I would hasten to point out that there are several aspects to Sailing and one can cruise, or race around buoys in the bay for a few hours,or dingy sail, or do offshore racing and trans oean/ circum globe, Take your choice but for the most part for anyone interested in taking it up, they should not be intimidated by the footage shown, thats all I have to say about it (for the moment).
Now with regard to the term "What a load of B.....ux", yes there were times that I would have rather been tucked up in bed" my job was as Bosun on STY` training young People in Reserve Navy (as mentioned before) was to bring home in full working condition, the 160 fingers that were entrusted to me at that time.Always did, thank God (though sometimes challanged, but they are stories for another day).
