Every vehicle will have a stated max tow hitch weight and towing capacity.
This should be on a plate on the vehicle's tow bar.

Exceed either, you're breaking the law and if something goes wrong your insurance company won't want to know you.

I'd aim to have the trailer hitch weight as close to, but not exceeding the max regardless of trailer weight.
