Hannah, just seen this now. I went out in my friends Lencraft (big heavy, but very stable RIB). We cruised along at roughly 25 kts, ploughing through the waves, which were quite steep as there was a force 4/5 blowing.
My younger brother then throttled up and shot passed us at around the 40 kt mark. To get the extra height he trimmed out a small bit (not to be advised when heading into a large sea; you should really be trimmed in!!) and gave the throttle an extra blip at the crest of the wave (again not advisable!!)
I was sat on the tubes of my friends RIB and I got the shot just as he flew past. He landed about 2 metres to the starboard side of us, so be prepared to get soaked!!
Please if you are going to try this, practice with smaller waves first until you are used to the technique. Most importantly don't back of the throttle once you are airborne. This will prevent you from stuffing into the back of the next wave
and also will stop the sea from rushing back up your exhaust!!
Most definitely don't get into the water to take the picture, as you are putting yourself at risk, one misjudgement and its game over unless you fancy your chances against a tonne of fibreglass followed by a nice shiny prop!!
You can also get good photos from a distance. Don't forget to get some pics of the landing too!!
