Thats some very nice looking RIBs. I particularly like the one with the windscreen all the way round. Has it got heating as well ?
Certainly means your not going to get fatigued as quick as an open RIB.

A fine trio.

Great photos Cork RIB

Always wonderful to see West Cork shots. Do any of you ever head east or is it less interesting? (Ballycotton, Youghal etc.)

Yep, go there too. Has to be said the scenery isn't as good east along and the pubs stay open longer down "west"

Even the word Fastnet sends a chill down my spine - bet it isn't often as calm as in the photos.

The photos do lie! there was a swell of about 2-3 m amongst the chop out there. no chance in hell of landing on the rock. Back in the lee of the land the swell was half the size and the sea mirror like at some times. It is reckoned that there are about 6 days a year on average that you could land there. Of all the times i've been out at the rock, I can only recall being able to land once.

Agree with you Codprawn. The last time I saw the Fastnet conditions were bad and it felt quite a lonely spot indeed.

You'll have to update this thread regularly Cork Rib to keep us exiled Corkonians happy!

It must be difficult to get across swell-size in photographs.

Hi Biggles, there is one of these "Humber type" wrap around jobs on Lencraft in West Ireland. Will not comment too much except it looks like a "Pig" dragging its belly in the water.
Whatever about the Humber, The lencraft sponsons were well down in the water. I think it was too heavy for the lencraft.

I dont know but at some stage these people will get a Cabin boat or a cabin rib or something. I think it looks pure ugly, even if it keeps you warmer

Hi Jackeens, Thought you said you were from Dublin! whats with the "Auld Corconians".

The weather off the Fastnet normally has high rollers coming in from Atlantic.
Add to this a good southwester and an ebb tide and you have "Fun".

About Mid July every year this swell stops and they get the red tide when the sea is like soup. I think it is something to do with the sun half way from Tropic to equator on the way down, but it is nearly every year and its a pussycat.
The ill fated Fastnet race was more to do with a fast moving storm that took everyone by surprise a few decades ago.I think 12 were killed and many boats went down. A small but deep depression scuttled across atlantic deepening on the way with a big high south and a big low north which pushed it on like its own eddie system. I do not remember the year.
It developed some 100 ft rollers with breaking tops in places.
That in itself is just the way it is, but the race should have been called off and it was not. This was due to poor forcasting rather than or with poor judgement. The fleet was abeam the safety of Cork Harbour and should have pulled in. Suffice to say the rest is history. It was an unusual storm, but it has made the Fastnet eternally notorious.

I am sure some of the Cork crew possibly were in the race. I seem to recall Golden apple went on the rocks and Moonduster headed for safety.
Any of ye old salts out there wish to add to this.

I have sailed around Fastnet many times and it was glorious, Azure seas, "Lickle" white capeens and sunshine, Hmmm.
I recall when getting into a pub in small town near Kinsale, i asked "when does the bar close?" November he quipped.
Dont know how long Yachting Monthly keeps previous issues, but from Crosshaven around to Bantry Bay is the best cruising ground in the world. Yep! and it would have to be in Cork which is the real capital of Ireland. Trust me! I know these things.. Dublin Bloody Dublin! (even tho I like the place) nY.M did a feature supplement of 8 pages on the place which is still good today.
Also a great place to rent a yacht for a change in Kinsale (take a skipper as sailing into "roaring water bay" to Schull is not for the faint hearted.

A terrible tragedy.

Liferafts and other safety equipment came under scrutiny afterwards.
