Kentish Forts in a different light

Had a trip out this afternoon with Adam, and with the setting sun, watched the often photographed Maunsell forts take on a different light.
It was a most beautiful sunset.

Sunrise and sunset often give the best times for capturing an image, Please add your sunrise/set pictures.

Tim.

Awesome - look like something out of War of the Worlds. Wasn't there some talk of them preserving them for posterity? They definitely should!!!

If you look carefully at the third pic, you can see Mowlem Marine...
They have started a restoration project to open them up. A friend sent me an email link http://www.project-redsand.com/

Terrific pictures. I agree with Codprawn, looks like giant Aliens rising from the Ocean.

Is that a windmill farm on the horizon in pic 3?

Hi Tim,

Great pictures!
A bit off topic but have you ever tried fishing around the forts. It looks like it should be good. The reason I ask is that I am thinking about giving a go next season.

Cheers,

Tony

Yes. Its the Kentish Flats site. Several megawatt output. Quite a big site by all accounts.

Not personally, but judging by the number of fishermen that congregate there it probably is a very good site.

Thanks for all the comments. The forts do have a war of the worlds charm, which is probably why they want to restore them.

red sands and shivering sands

The forts are sometimes good sometimes not for fishing (like anything) but I used to see loads of guys out there when we ran tours out. The walkways that once connected them are basically wrapped around the legs and the sea life is amazing. One guy was rod fishing and pulled an amazing lobster out last season. They are very sound. red sands also has 2 periguin falcons during the summer and they buzz from gun tower 3 to the searchlight tower.
They are safe to navigate (steer clear of Shivering sands wreckage shown by the leg sticking up as it will have your boat!) and the shipping lanes add a bit of interest.
Redsands is the set under discussion, Robin Adcroft is very approachable and will always answer questions.
they are crown estates owned at present I believe and Robin is hoping to take over at some point. I loved doing tours out there and found them to be both striking and manacing. Quite something when viz is 30 meters and you pull up alongside.
Red sands is the one that says Mowlem has now been reinstated with this temp platform which enables mad people with KEYS to go aboard.
To be blown away do go further to Knock John which is the naval fort.
Looking farwards to spending another few hundred hours out there this year!
last year I took nearly a hundred groups out to see them.
