Always make our two boys (5 and 7) wear jackets and i always wear the kill cord but after buying the bigger boat this winter which had 4 adult lifejackets we also wear them.
I'm in the RNLI and the one thing that is drummed home with immersion casualties is cold water shock.

You may think you can swim a good distance but being plunged into cold UK water fighting to breath without gasping in loads of water and then trying to swim with all your muscles cramping in minutes ...its a serious situation.

One thing to add to kill cords is carry a spare ..!! as if the driver goes over and stops the engine at least the passengers can start the boat again and pick him up. (carefully of course)

I still reckon they should have let the thing ruin out of fuel rather than trying the heroics - it was locked into a tight turn and wasn't going anywhere - well it wasn't until they started ramming it!!!

quite... i would have half expected to see the outboard get knocked and see the rib fly off on some random trajectory. which would have to have been more of a worry than it doing donuts.

did think just lob in some floating line close by and watch to see how it finds the prop.

They DID try to get as line around the prop but it didn't work. Ramming the boat was just plain stupid - it's just lucky the engine went back over to full lock....
