Having got totally confused (as a first time visitor to Lymington) quite where to moor, we ended up on the town quay - a pontoon. As it was lovely weather there was a massive audience of retired curtain twitchers including a couple of ladies sitting right on the edge of the harbour and probably weighing in at 40 stones each sitting in (I assume reinforced) chairs eating pies and watching our every move through mouthfuls of food.
This was fine for mooring- I approached at a shallow angle, cruised up to the pontoon, wife jumps out and ties us up. All fine. Vague nods of approval from audience.
Lunch.
Return to boat to see a Rubiks' Cube of ropes and RIBs tied up to us. The audience of twitchers has now swelled to crowd-like proportions. All with the same expression of open mouthed boredom - the same expression a dog might have if you showed it a card trick. This is not the moment to cock anything up.
We have yachts and motor launches to the front and back, RIB's all the way out to sea (or so it seemed).
Suddenly every RIB owner magically appeared, clambered over our boat and took off - leaving us to slide coolly out. Massive result.
