Gentlemans boat racing.....

Blundered across this (the first of three in the series) films on youtube...

Cant explain why ....just captivated me ..even has a 'rubber boat' in it and it was 1969 ..even the music just sort of works

When racing was done in a style? Just brilliant

Some of those old boats are still about. GEE 185 is the boat I'm mixed up with and she was entered into that race. It wasn't until 2008 that she achieved the round Britain. She is in Antibes at the moment still in her race livery. Ill be down to check on her next month. Will be good to get back on her

The good old days. Judging by the bitching and backstabbing that goes on over at Boat Mad its a sport that now seems to be dominated by tossers. Apart from JF of course, he's lovely

Loved that

Highlights for me of course were the odd clips of Horatia, Peter Thornycroft's Nelson 40

Not all there are some good guys in there but it difficult to cut out a cancer without being brutal. When they all get the same direction I believe something will happen

I know and I really am not in a position to make such a sweeping statement however judging by the last thread I read on BM about the Venture Cup it does seem to be imploding somewhat.

Think I preferred the previous commentator, unless I needed lulling to sleep

Good old Jim Davidson, wonder what he's up to these days...

Jim Davidson used to race boats in the early days. I stopped him from falling in the drink in Poole one year

I don't generally think of myself as a tosser but I suppose you're entitled to your opinion!

For me it was the style that things were done in...just with the right 'can do' attitude and I'm sure everyone trying to help acheive the same end - almost as if the fact it was a race was an added benefit (but knowing that actually poeple still wanted to go faster/ win ).

I'm also a big big fan of the boats of the day......take a boat racing then sit on the deck of same boat with a G&T .....and nothing would have looked out of place
