first proper go on new boat

had a couple of short bursts since i bought the boat at loch lomond but went on a wee jaunt today to Arran/Holy Island, was in the region of 70-80 miles so more akin to a normal day out rather than hiding in loch lomond

also got to try out the new yamaha 8hp 2 stroke, great little engine, managed 6mph against tide without maxing it out, i need to fit a transom saver before i crank it up as the current towel to protect the transom will move if not careful.

it is amazing the rough this thing goes through, it literally doesn't give a hoot what you point it at.

Nice boat and vid Xk59D,
tell me this, youv'e obviously not got much steering movement on your aux, due to the tubes and A frame, i take it your do most of your'e steering with the main engine?,, Iv'e got a similar setup but not really tried it it out yet, have you tried any close quarter moves, if so how did it perform.

to be honest i've never used it in close quarters, but due to the offset it doesn't need much to turn to starboard. i can quite easily control the direction with the big engine either in or out the water by just using the aux

with the big motor in i do lose about 1.5mph so if you need to go a ways then i'd take the big engine out and lower it for steerage in close quarters.

I suspect you'll find what I did when I tried to come alongside a pontoon with mine.

It's nigh on impossible to do neatly unless there's no tide or wind at all as there just isn't the room to have fine control over the aux.

i guess the point is to get you home, how you arrive isn't really that important as long as it is safe and dry

That's the one! I use mine for trolling for mackerel and the like as well. It's quite liberating not being stuck at the console while fishing.

out again today, i purposely tried maneuvering out the marina and then later tie off to a mooring with the aux, no problems.

i done about 8 miles today with the little yam, with the tide it is nearly 8mph, almost quick enough to not bother with the big-un

some pics of the shipwreck in the clyde, MV Captayannis which dragged its anchor and went over onto its side in 1974. it is known locally as "the sugar boat" as it was full of it when it went over.
