Farfetched - about a week to go

These photos in the Solent hanger last Thursday. Sea trial scheduled for this Friday. Any comments, questions, ideas, suggestions, criticisms even, greatly welcomed....

Last photo shows the raised deck forward which gives a large bow locker and it has a three piece cushion to go on it to make a very comfortable lounger for those rare sunny, dead calm Solent days...

Very nice Bruce, asking all those questions certainly seems to have paid off.

It looks nice, Bruce. Just two wee suggestions for you.

1) You'll appreciate that tall console but side screens will make all the difference. You get wet on a rib because water thown out from the front quarters gets blown back aboard. It comes at you from the quarters.

2) The grey bow protection/anchor guide needs to go right down to the hull. That area is vulnerable when you are at a pontoon berth. It's just the right height to wear through the tube to hull joining strip. Also, one of the neat manoeuvres in a rib is to put the bow up against a rock, old jetty, wall etc. and hold it there by applying a bit of power, your pasengers can then embark/disembark by stepping over the bow. Especially good for you since you've got that useful raised fordeck. You can also use this technique for turning around in a very tight space.

Just interested why they only fitted 1 elephants trunk to yours?

Ive only got one, and Lee seemed a little reluctant even to fit one on mine.

Thanks

Thanks for all the input. Yes, there were many questions answered very kindly by all of you on Ribnet - thank you. There were many more asked of Lee and Kevin at Solent Ribs / Fairweather Marine.

I suppose I liken it to buying a sports car when the only standard item off the shelf is the bare chassis.... and you have just passed your driving test in an old mini. How anyone gets through this without help, I do not know.

There are just too many options!!!!

Dealing with the specifics:

"Why one elelphant's trunk" - Lee says it is a very dry boat and we can always fit another one if I find I need it

"You'll appreciate that tall console but side screens will make all the difference"

Didn't know there were such things! jwalker - can you please point me to a picture / website for their supply? The console is quite narrow - this rib is not terribly beamy - and I think they might feel constraining.

"The grey bow protection/anchor guide needs to go right down to the hull. That area is vulnerable when you are at a pontoon berth. It's just the right height to wear through the tube to hull joining strip."

While I do not expect to use the bow for embarking / exiting the boat, I I can see if the boat was moored so the nose was up against a pontoon there might be a rub risk. Could this not be handled simply by dropping a fender down the fairlead.

I attach a close up of the area.

How would you suggest this rub risk is removed. It is a bit late (I think) to remove the 'grey bow protection/anchor guide' (?fairlead?) and put a new one on - that would damage the tubes would it not? What could be done?

Any other thoughts?

Bruce

You can see the sharp corner where the joining strip folds over the hull. It looks particularly vulnerable on your boat. A nice radiussing there would have been good. You only need one bad landing and that corner will be through. Get them to stick on a piece of the grey to extend right down to the hull.

I've no idea where you can buy side screens, I made mine. One was fixed and overlapped the tube and the other laid flat against the consol to allow one to pass and it then folded out to give protection, about 45°.

If you stuff it badly, that wee trunk will take a day to empty the boat. Well not quite, but you know what I mean. Having a second fitted after an incident is typical British thinking.

You may well use the bow for landing folk, but you don't yet know it.

Anyway, it does look smart. I wish you good boating.
