I had the same experience with West Epoxy, the secret is to use wide shallow pots rather than deep pots. It keeps the mix cooler & slows it down.

I had a load of old Halfords resin and hardener I found in a scrap boat I bought a few years ago so I did some experimenting.
It NEARLY caught fire, it melted the pot it was in and the popping blew the resin apart
