Atlantic 75 off Anglesey

Some shots of the Treaddur Bay (Anglesey) Atlantic 75 in action at the week-end on a training exercise.

Part of the training regime involves close quarter manoevring inside the multitude of caves prevalent on the Anglesey coast.

Will it, won't it......?

And then there were two. Close quarter rendezvous with the Holyhead D-class off South Stack.

The D-class inflatables have proved invaluable on Anglesey for getting tight into the rocky shallows so prevalent on the island's coastline.

There's always been a great camaraderie between these two stations' crews.

On the photo of the Atlantic 75 being 'put away' do they recover the boats backwards (to the norm) on the trailer?

Great photos Phil.
As I am trying to set up my 5mtr rescue RIB can you please give me any pointers on the extras (apart from the self riding gear and 1st aid kit) that there is on that boat (can't really tell much from the photos apart from the obvious staff)? Any info much appreciated.
Cheers

Steedthrust.
Reference recovery or an Atlantic. The trailer shown is a Do-Do (drive on drive off). If you look, the tractor unit is still attached so if the tractor tows the ILB to the launch site, turns around, then reverses into the sea, then the ILB can drive straight off. The engines can be started before it get into the sea thanks to water tanks mounted on the trailer and connected to the engines.
Upon recovery, the trailer has a net system which is erected by the tractor crew. The ILB drives straight onto the trailer and is "caught" in the net. the tractor then pulls out of the sea. Problem now is the ILB is the wrong way round. So the ILB is pulled off the trailer onto a small turntable unit, turned around, and put back onto the trailer ready to launch again.
This is shown in the sidmouth lifeboat web site: http://www.sidmouthlifeboat.org.uk/ under launch recovery.
There may well be amethod now or disconnecting the towing arm and re connecting in on the other end of the trailer to safe having to turn the ILB around.

Hi Manos - well for a start the Atlantic 75 does not have a transom (rather like a ZapCat!) which obviously facilitates evacuation of water when it's stuffed in big seas. It also has the facility to take on (or dump) water ballast in (out of) the hull which greatly assists its seakeeping capabilities and enables it to maintain much higher speeds in rough water than it would otherwise be able to do.

I expect you're aware that the engines are equipped with mercury tilt switches which cut them out instantly in the event of a capsize and incorporate a number of other modifications which allow the engines to be fired up once the boat has been righted by the air bag. I understand that's one of the reasons why the RNLI don't use 4-strokes. Incidentally, the replacement RIB for the Atlantic 75, which is currently being phased in throughout the UK, is slightly longer and has a bigger beam and I understand will be fitted with twin Tohatsu 110hp (?) engines.

Oh, and it's got a flashing blue light on the A frame and a bloody big winch for'd which Jono would kill to have fitted to his Land Rover It's also got a stretcher which has proved useful in Anglesey for carting away rock climbers who regularly fall off the cliffs at South Stack. None of which is much help to you, Manos, with regard to your 5m safety RIB, unless you take a power saw to the transom or fancy fitting a trap door in the hull to let the water ballast in And I forgot to mention it costs £85K.

Daniel - Yep, it's the same engine as yours, a Mariner 40hp, with a few mods of course to make it immersion proof. They're currently replacing the current D-class inflatables with a slightly larger boat and these are fitted with a 50hp Mariner and a fancy composite hull I believe. You can actually buy reconditioned RNLI engines off the D-class boats, and I'm told they're quite good value. Never raced or rallied and serviced to the hilt.

Steedthrust - The trailer is reversible. The boat is recovered bow first, it's not reversed on. For launching the engines are started and warmed up by means of a dedicated water supply from a tank on the trailer. In the last photo you can actually see the water pipes attached to the side of the trailer cage. On entering the sea these pipes are automatically disconnected from the engines' water inlet ports and off she goes. All clever stuff.

I would love going on an Atlantic 75 training with RNLI as I went on training on Atlantic 21 long time ago that was valuable lesson. The difference between the boats are great and I have tried the Atlantic 75 twice and it is much better than it predecessor also intended for more offshore.

Manos,

You probably already have the relevant solas requirements for equipment but if not the following link may be of help. Additionally you probably have most of the items listed.

http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/other/d...s/1998/31.html

Section 5 details the necessary equipment for a Rescue Craft and is aimed at those stored on larger ships - it is from 1998 so may have been supersceeded but is at least some suggestions.

Cheers

Mike

Thanks Mike ,
Just had a read over and I have the lot (this is what the list I've got here says too, so I believe that it has been taken from there) and a few more bits that they do not mention (like GPS, 2 VHFs, fog horn -not that will need it in Greece but you never know -, aux engine and a few other bits).
The boat will pass its annual survey in a few weeks time and I need to make sure that everything is 100+% right.
Is too expensive to have it surveyed again by 3 different authorities if I have missed something.

I have just bought an ex RNLI Mariner 40hp. It's in great condition, has quite a few extras in at, as someone said, to make it immersion proof, and up-side down proof. It was great value at only £1200 with warrenty!
