Was it on a boat with a mains electricity connection? Perhaps with a really high earth leakage current? or possibly a twin engine instalation with the engines not electrically tied together?
i guess if you had +12v on one motor case and 0v on the other then this sort of damage would happen in a matter of days???

My guess would be that Mr Paddle is spot on with a pontoon mains supply problem.

....Yikes. and I thought my old 55 had degraded a bit.

Yep. that engine definetly had a large anode.... Most of us call it by it's nomal name - the leg!

If it ain't an electrical fault I sure as ***k wouldn't want to go swimming in there.
