No - I don't think there are any limitations in going down in size, certainly not from a weight / plate thickness issue. I guess the onlu issue could be whether it is cost effective, but if set-up correctly as you suggest I'm sure there could be demand. If the Scandinavians (and some others) can produce hard / open boats at the correct price then it should be slightly easier with RIBs as the tubes are not going to vary much in price over a similar length grp boat and so the hull costs differences will be less over the cost of the whole boat.

I'm sure it would be possible to create some really good small Aluminium RIBs!

An up-date at last - turning out to be a long running project, mainly as the builder is so busy building customer boats and in demand.

But the Ali RIB has now been tubed and looks great - shame could not get any quality photos, but not enough space in the works.

Next stage is for hull to be painted - before builder looks at making consoles etc.

Long time - and I've been looking forward to seeing it on the water for ages.

The builder is a 'bit a victim of his own success' - it will be his own boat / demonstrator of his work - but his work is really good and he is always bust with new builds for clients, which have to come first!

It looks stunning, is there a cost factor difference between ally and GRP? I welded for a log part of my previous job, I still miss the yoga of the molten pool.

I guess from a designers point of view it's harder to splash an Ali boat!

I've just finished driving a Ribworker 40 and I do like Ali Ribs in the work place

Nice one Adam

Has anybody seen or heard of plans available for a 8.5ish metre aluminium hull? This thread's putting silly ideas in my head!

Very happy to come up with a design of an Aluminium RIB of that length!

Searching the forum for "aluminium hull" your name came up more than most and all very positive I might add! (As well as the elusive "crazyhorse" ali rib which was quite interesting/funny to read! Does anyone know if this boat actually got built in the end?!)

Adam - I would be interested in discussing this further with you but at the same time I don't want to waste your time, this could all be way beyond my budget! Are we talking big numbers to design a hull this size incorporating my own requirements? Would you be able to supply complete fabrication drawings/cad files for the stringers etc and flat patterns for the hull plates? I guess theres a lot of work involved in calculating stesses and loads etc.
Welcome to PM me if you like!
