Started it today in the wheely bin. Started second pull and once it was warm, idled lovely and started easily on a slow pull. Couldn't get WOT in the bin in gear. 3/4 and it was trying to bust the bin whilst emptying the bin of freezing water

If I would have waited a few weeks I'd have bought this and saved a few £££

Not sure mate as the serial sticker is missing.

What I do know is that all 9.8's after 2001 had a sticker for a serial plate as opposed to earlier engines having a metal serial plate.

So all I can tell you is its no older than a 2001 model.

And it's older than 2006, 'cos they were dark blue.

They need to fill a box that doesn't throw the quote back at them. It's irrelevant to you if there isn't a number. You're honest and paying your premium and assuming your not lying when your engine gets nicked and if that's all that's standing between you and a payout.......give them a number, then put that number on the engine........only if it doesn't have one in the first place.
As you say, it can be a sticker. As long as the number that's on the engine matches and does not contradict or hide any other identification, then that number stands.

It's a good point. A postcode and phone number for instance.

The only thing is, it'll be a pain in the bum if you're stopped while they're looking for stolen Jetskis as you can't prove it's yours with no way of IDing it from a receipt.

Not to mention you have then gone from being an innocent owner of the unidentified engine to fraudulently modifying it by putting a knowingly incorrect number onto the engine, which could then land you in trouble should the real identity even become known. The number you put on has to match the manufacturers database which will be used to confirm identity and valuation so a Post code won't work. It would have had a number at some point which begs the question why has it not now ?

I'd sooner run with no numbers than a fake one. Yes I understand your points regarding getting paid out but at what cost ? In the end your just putting up premiums for everybody else and providing an outlet for stolen engines. Simply remove markings and put your post code on it then it's yours, right ?

Let me make it clear though I do not believe the engine in this thread is in any way suspicious. I trust the seller from previous dealings I've had. Stickers can and do fall off. This is a general comment.

The serial number sticker on my 4hp Yamaha fell off this summer.

There in the spring. Gone at the end of the season :-(
