I was thinking of buying one of these myself but I have a couple of questions: (a) are they as safe as the normal sit-in types with the spray apron thingy? and (b) does kayaking knacker your shoulders?

I have a couple of frenzys great fun surfing big waves and you don't get trapped in like a sit in one

(a) for the novice probably safer. (b) like any new exercise you will feel it if you have not used these muscles before, but it is good exercise and the fuel is reasonably cheap (mars bars)

I bought one a couple of years ago and ended up buying new as the used prices were so high.

Shouldn't knacker your shoulders unless you're doing something wrong!

I have a single and a double sit on and I can get back into both of them (Perception) if they capsize which is a major plus point to me.

Mine are also broad which aids stability but does add a lot to the drag so are not good for long distances.

Great exercise and will built up your upper body if used regularly

Great fun, Everyone joins in even the Mrs, Especially while waiting at a busy slipway. Keeps the kids excited, Chuck it on the roofbars when you finished, Hose it down when your home and stick it back on the wall. Simples

Great for fishing as well pics are rat island moelfe.

These sit upons are a great starter for 10, all thats been said before stable, safe, relatively cheap compared to a closed cockpit kayak, and easy to get back on / in if you fall off.

Down side is, there not a closed cockpit kayak!, where you can be a bit more adventurous wrt the water you decide to paddle.

In general a good way to get started with Kayaking but will be limited if you want to move onto learning the next level.

Ive got a couple, both Ocean Kayaks. Prowler 13 for myself and also the Malibu 2 for when the wife fancies going out as well.

As stated, good for excercise, easy to launch/recover.... and cheap to run

To answer the second question is a bit more difficult, it depends on how much you do and how extreme you take it like all things.

Most injuries are actually getting it off and on the water (remember benz ze knees!)

If your just doing simple paddling then you'll be fine, but a few of my friends in the club have dislocated there shoulders doing "high braced" supports when surfing or a bit of white water.
