What type of paint is it?
It use to be that cellulose based paint (as used in car aerosols) couldn't be put on top of normal household and enamel paints but you could do it the other way round. This was 10/20 years ago - I don't know if things have changed since.
It would probably be best to do a test spray on the bottom or round the back first if you are trying to get a posh finish.
