Here

Here's the cheapest on 551

Remember these are not the Sonar models though. We can supply at similar prices but cannot beat them by much, if at all

I am hearing some people are having grief with updating the charts. E.g. they buy a new product and the charts are already a year old and they have to pay to get updates. Also it advised you have the SD card for this which again is extra.

I can't find any info on this on the Garmin site where you have to update from apparently and the local chandlers who sell them don't know how you get updates

Anyone know what the procedure is?

Ah Thanks

I am looking for a 551,620 or 750. I don't want to spend more than £500 so the 750 will have to be secondhand!

I have passed your message on to this guy who is having problems.

"I have just checked and there is no mention of the chart version on the outside of the box or in any of the paper work. I have checked under system settings and it states that I have version G2 V2012 13.50 installed. When I go onto the garmin website and enter the plotter serial number it states that there is a version 2012.5 available to purchase but it is in dollars which is rather strange considering it identifies the unit as a GPSmap551s that is only available in the UK. If you go to the UK customer support web site it brings up a list of plotters that does not include the 551s.The uk web site also sometimes directs you to Mapping | Explore | Garmin | United Kingdom which I did not read properly before purchasing the plotter. If as stated on this thread the charts are updated in January/February then there is a good chance that most plotters purchased in the next few months will either have out of date charts or only a couple of weeks left in date"

Think you get free updates for 6 months from time of purchase with any Garmin mapping product, either an sd card or pre-loaded. This means you can update to the latest. They update the maps every six months, hence the current map version is 2012.5

This is the reply form the guy

"I have allready updated the software using my own sd card and downloading the update from the garmin website as it was also out of date. This was easy but you still have to pay to update the charts"

I'll ring your linked number tomorrow and find out about it all before I buy - thanks

Have to say, I'm not too worried as I use paper IMRAY updated charts as well and my sailing is only along the South Coast, mainly Solent so nothing too adventurous.

Crossing the channel would be a big achievement for me - it would a damn site quicker in a RIB!!

Garmin firmware updates are free. Map updates are chargeable.

Def give Dominic in North Atlantic rib marine a call, he opens again on Tuesday, I recently had a new 720s fitted by him, with the charts. It's a brilliant bit of kit at a fantastic price. Great plotter and sounder. He is very very competitive on all garmin.

If it isn't broken dont fix it.

Always my opinion on firmware updates unless there is a feature that you must have.

That's a very broad statement. So, are you still running v1.0 of Windows XP? I'll wager, course not.
I'd go the other way and ask why wouldn't you update? They're generally done for a reason based on customer feedback. If you look at the update history for the Garmin 551 the OP was asking about, there's all sorts of performance and stability improvements as well as feature lifts and layout changes. Why would you not want that?
