Define cheap and also small.

Are you after a pocket model that can be mounted and perhaps powered by 12v? This is the ideal in performance for size I reckon.

Or are you after the least frills, with just a lat/long displayed on a black and white screen?

There is a RIB.net member with a Raymarine plotter for sale, not sure if that will be either small enough or cheap enough though.

Garmin still do a bog standard fixed GPS, the 152H at about 150 quid new.

Plenty of waterproof hillwalking units out there for Sub £80. If you want the opportunity to get it to talk to a VHF for some DSC, Garmin 72 or 76s do that as a standard feature.

You should be able to get a brand new Garmin 451 for just over your budget, 475.00 perhaps.

Second hand wise, there is a RIB.netter with a Raymarine plotter for sale - not sure of the price but you could make him an offer and see what happens.
