Round Fastnet Powerboat Raid

Start your Powerboat cruising season with The Round Fastnet Raid on 26
March 2001. It's a day cruise of about 30nM, which is being organised as
part of theIrish Sailing Association Powerboat Instructor Conference in
Schull, West Cork, Ireland.

Although this event is primarily aimed at ISA Powerboat Instructors
attending the conference, visitors are also welcome.

Very early plans are also afoot to form an Irish Powerboating Association .It is hoped that this Association will be allowed to affilliate to the Irish Sailing Association . For our UK readers , the ISA is our equivalent of the RYA . Excellent links between the RYA and ISA are well established and our training schemes and qualifications are cross recognised .

The aims of the Irish Powerboating Association will be to promote the
enjoyment of the sport of Powerboating in a safe and responsible manner
through events and rallies and to represent the general interests of
Powerboaters . A small nucleus of Irish Powerboaters has already formed so
that the concept can be further developed . If you would like to find out

Hi John ,

The Irish Sailing Association ( of which I am the National Powerboat , Motorboat and PWC Trainer )is the National Governing body for Powerboating in Ireland i.e. we are recognised as such by the Government .

However , to be honest , our involvement in Powerboating has really only extended to running ( very sucessful ) Powerboat Training schemes . As the National Governing Body , we have also played a leading role in advising the Government on the Leisure craft safety review which recently took place here and which will lead next year to mandatory Competencey testing ( probably ISA / RYA Level 2 )for drivers of all craft capable of over 17 knots .

I felt that instead of the ISA setting up a Powerboat Association and trying to encourage people to join , it would be much better if the people concerned formed the Association and then affilliated to the ISA .

In this way the Powerboat Association members will feel that they have both the ownership of their Association as well as having the safety of being under the wing of Big Brother , the ISA .

Many thanks again to you Hugh (Holmes) for the recent phone call and the info above concerning the Irish Powerboat ( Racing ) Association . We are aware of their history and will check out the proposed name etc before we go official . I seem to remember that this was a small group of hydroplane , cat and vee hull racers who may no longer be active .

Hi folks and a Happy New Year all around.

I'll be flying over for the Boat Show next Monday to Thursday . I'll be meeting my opposite no's in the RYA as well as doing some normal business for my company.

I would be interested in hearing of any useful contacts at the show with both my National Powerboat Trainer hat on as well as with my hat as well as being one of the people setting up the Irish Powerboat club / association .

Any members of the forum here with stands at the show ? or can anyone reccomend contacts with Biboa , training schools etc .....that I should say hello to ?

I don't know whether you will read this before you get back from London -- I'm not going until Friday so I won't ge able to have a Guinness with you anyway!

I would like to compile a list of good training organisations who offer realistic RIB alternatives to the rather simplistic RYA powerboat scheme, so let me know if you coma across anything interesting (business considerations permitting, of course!)

Irish National Radio's ( RTE ) Maritime programme "Seascapes " will carry a feature this week
about the proposed Irish Powerboaters Association .

The programme which is presented by RTE's Marine Correspondent Tom Mac Sweeney
goes out on RTE Radio 1 at 9.30 pm on Thursday 22 February 2001.

The Steering group of the new association has also secured a stand at the forthcoming Dublin Boat Show in the RDS Dublin from 7 to 11 March . The purpose of this stand is to create awareness and to attract members to the proposed association .We are now looking for volunteers to help man our small information stand for a few hours during the show .Further information and updates will be carried on the news page of www.powerboat.org (http://www.powerboat.org)

The Dublin Boat Show due to start next week has been cancelled due to the Foot and Mouth Scare .

This is a pity given the amount of work put into our stand for the Association , however I am sure you will all understand the need to serve the greater good .

Foot and Mouth update . Here in Ireland the country has practically ground to a halt as we seal ourselves off in a bid to prevent Foot and Mouth entering the country . This has resulted in the cancellation of practically all sporting events boat shows etc .

The Irish Sailing Association will make a go no go decision on the Schull Fastnet conference and therfore our RIB Raid on next Wednesday 14 March . As soon as I have news I will post to the forum as well as to the group subscribed to the IPBA news group .
