Jono 11 September 2004, 14:53 Ok.. Now I’ve got three of these Green Blobby things, I feel that I can start the following campaign without people accusing me of blob jealousy….
Please can we get rid of the stupid things, Mr J.K ?
All they seem to do is encourage petty minded behaviour from the “less than mature” element here on this site. They aren’t exactly a true reflection on people’s knowledge are they? I mean, for feck’s sake, I’ve got three of ‘em and I know this side, just, of feck’ all! At least I know that I know not and so generally won’t give any serious advice on boating matters! Engineering yes, any aspect of QA you want yes, basic common sense things yes but boating? Nope, not me. I’ll leave that to the likes of the other Jono and the myriad of other seasoned Ribsters on here.
There are people on here who, quite frankly, talk garbage and some of it quite dangerous
.
I am confident that most people who log on here can spot the idiot from the knowledgeable fairly quickly and learn to ignore the advice from the unreliable. However, what if a poor “newcomer” can’t differentiate and takes some of the , less than sound, advice that is put forward by people with plenty of “Green Blobs” ? At best they may just be put off a little, at worst they could end up in serious trouble. Then what? I know that we should all, ultimately, be responsible for our own actions, but……..
So do YOU think the greenies are are a good idea still? A harmless bit of fun or an incident waiting to happen?
I say "scrap the little feckas now!"
Jono :D
gingercoastie 11 September 2004, 15:19 Personally,
I take absolutely no notice of the blobs myself.
codprawn 11 September 2004, 15:27 Good for you Jono - my blobs seem to go up and down like a YO-YO - personally I have never bothered with them - people seem quick enough to post derogatory remarks about me and to knock points off my credibility - just as well I don't do the same when they make stupid comments!!!
Nasher 11 September 2004, 16:37 Green blobs, what green blobs?
Oh, those green blobs, what do they do then?
Nasher.

I seem to have gone back down to 1 greenie, so if you all hit me with a red we can see what happens.
Now, where did I leave my wheel, this little Guiniea Pigs need its excercise.
P.S. How do you find out where your hits are comming from? I would like to know if the reds came from this thread or the other cr@p I post.
The Jackeens 11 September 2004, 21:14 Stu...that was very funny :D :D
Mark if you click on your rep mark (on the left with the tick/ cross) you will see your own points and whether you had positive or neg or 'even' rep. on that particular post.

Nah, Mark what I meant was has anyone that actually uses this forum on a regular basis (ok 1.2 posts per day will do, mine isn't even above decimal place yet!) got a red cred blob as opposed to bland blue blob or great green blob.
There is only one that I know of and wondered if there were more.

John Kennett 12 September 2004, 00:04 Please can we get rid of the stupid things, Mr J.K ? . . . I say "scrap the little feckas now!"So you don't like them then? :eh:
The whole thing seems like a very simple concept to me. If you find a post useful or informative, give it some points. If a post is patently useless, ill informed or dangerous, give it some negative points.
I mean, for feck’s sake, I’ve got three of ‘em and I know this side, just, of feck’ all! At least I know that I know not and so generally won’t give any serious advice on boating matters!
It's not a quantitive measure of how much someone knows, it's an indication of how useful their posts are. Someone who knows a little but posts good advice should end up with a higher score than someone who may have a wealth of knowledge but whose posts are unhelpful.
This is obviously skewed by people giving out positive scores as "hugs" rather than basing them on how useful their posts are, and there does seem to be an inevitable correlation between the number of posts made and a person's credibility score (if you don't post, you can't get points; if you post a lot you will probably pick up points over time; on balance people give more positive points than negative, so if you post enough you will probably get a high rating).
The whole system is still on trial and I'll be deciding whether or not to keep it in a few weeks time. I still think that in most cases it is actually working quite well.
John

Well said Jono. I pretty well opted out of the system a while back and I can honestly say that, until Kathleen mentioned it a few posts back, I didn't even know that a post could be checked. So, I've done a little personal survey. It seems that useful posts are even or negative, asking questions gets positive ( :eh: ) and saying thankyou gets negative ( :eh: ). Cool. What a useful addition they are.
:D
MarkWildey 12 September 2004, 01:21 Personally I find it hilarious that I have three of these things. Never realised I talked with such sagacity:]

........both right. For me the blobby things are a little like the hand gestures one uses in the car. For example, if the nice chap in the Volvo pulls in to let you by one has a tendancy to gesture ones appreciation with a wave. Unfortunately we don't have time to stop and chat, shake his hand etc. Likewise if a tosser in a white van cuts you up one sometimes gestures ones appreciation for such stupidity with either a clenched fist moving vertically at speed, the two fingerd victory salute or just, in my case at least, a little wave and a laugh. Whichever the case these gestures are just a quick way of demonstrating ones feelings at that particular moment in time. For me the greenies are the same, a quick off the cuff response to a stupid remark or a positive one. After all it's better than posting abuse or in the example of the car, punching someones lights out 5 times a day.
Jono 13 September 2004, 06:36 . After all it's better than .... punching someones lights out 5 times a day.
