Cable management

I've decided to (finally) wire up my electrics, properly! My past experiance of this sort of thing has ended with a mass of twisted wires going everywhere, so I'm keen to do this right!
I've tested the little sticky plastic things you stick on then thread a cable tie through, but these always peel off when they get damp.
Another problem is that I think the console is really too thin to drill in to, so I can't screw any fixings in.

All suggestions (and photos :D) on how to organise my cables in a nice neat way will be greatfully received!

I am currently using the plastic style clips you are talking about, however I have removed the sticky pad they come with and used a really strong tape called (Bogey Tape) this is not a wind up, I work in the Exhibition sign industry and we use it to stick farely heavy signs up outdoors and it sticks like **** to a blanket. Really Strong and water proof and as yet it has not come off of my boat. If you have a sign company near you ask them, it is farely expensive but works. Hope this helps.

I suppose silicone or some other glue type substance might work. I shall consider that though. How expensive is expensive?

For 10m it is approx £45, I'll have a look around my unit tomorrow and see if I have a part roll, cos I guess you won't need much, if I have a part roll kicking around I'll let you know and I'll post it to you.

Just had a thought of an easy solution, how about simply Aralditing (super strong 2 part epoxy glue, just incase you didn't know) some tie wraps/zip ties or whatever you care to call them to the side of the console?

I reckon glue it with a dab of glue near to the ratchet end (if that makes sense?) then that'll leave a long free end to wrap around large or small bunches of cable.

I've never done this and it literally just popped into my head so it might not work!

Been there too, and having seen the pics of Chris wiring up his Falcon he puts most of us to shame never mind the rib builders.

Try aralditing the plastic clips on - it works on the race boat so it should work on anything!

Spiral wrap is good for keping the cables tidy or plastic flexi conduit. I am suprised the tabs you have used fall of, i got mine from RS and they stick really well..is the inside of the console smooth? I fitted all the bits on a board, that made it easier to work on. dont foret to use tinned cable where you can, that will cut down on corrosion problems. Merlin Equipment do some good marine bits.

That is some very nice cable management!!!

If youre worried about the thickness of the console try using a snap rivet or nylon push rivet to hold the cable tie base on.

Peel cable tie base
Stick it on
Drill required hole say 5mm (with base in position)
Add right sized snap/push rivet
Feed through cable tie

Job Done!

Easier than cable ties as its a one piece unit:

The other thing you could use is a push in clip designed for wire management.

There are loads of different sizes and types.

All you have to do is drill a 4.8/5mm hole
Push the arrowhead part of the clip in
Put wires in holder part of clip.

You can also get push in holders for cable ties.....there are loads of easy ways of doing this

Another vote here for the araldite on the cable tie clips, that's how I did it.

I used the plastic clip thingies on the outside of the transom to hold my depthfinder cable. Wipe the surface with a bit of acetone, moisten the foam tape adhesive with acetone (one swipe with a damp cloth will do it) then stick it on. Mine lasted 3 years, and when they began failing, the tape let go of the plastic.

I use the same style clips on my Zodiac but have not had any problems with unsticking.
