What size screen for plotter?

What size is the maximum sensible for a RIB double console - for my Solent? I am considering the Lowrance range. Would 10.4" by 12.2" consume too much of the console space?

I am looking to buy the kit in the States.

I would say the bigger the better!
But 10" X 12" thats bl**y enormous!!
I'm looking at a 17" monitor as I write which is about the same size now put that on a rib console it would take up a hell of a lot of room!

Bruce, I think you need to spend several hours with cardboard cut outs to get this right. There are a couple of Solents in the carpark opposite Lee at the moment, would be worth spending the day down there trying different layouts especically as they have the steering wheel fitted so you can see how it will look and fit.

I think you can get smoe templates from Taymarine, doesnt look like they are free though

You'd think they would be. We looked very briefly at combined units i.e. split screen on one screen. Decided against due to small area couldnt run to 10" budget!

I have been going through similar dilemmas about instrumentation too. Here is my 2p worth !
Make sure that you can read the data in strong sunlight (fine chance this year !) some are more read able than others
Also the font size of numeric data, nice big letters are much easier to read at speed. Played around with a raymarine unit and found no way of increasing the font size.
Really liked the Garmin 2010C, put some things annoyed me about it, such as the garmin specific data cards, only 12 month warranty and inability to transfer data back to a PC easily.
So have decided on the Lowrance 7000C, 2 year warranty, standard data card, not sure about PC connectivity – its also cheaper !

Thanks for the input. The unit I am thinking of is the LCX104
combo fishfinder / plotter with "10.4" (26.4 cm) diagonal 256-color, full VGA liquid crystal TFT display 480V x 640H resolution". That has the cut out size of 10.4"x12.2".

The next one down is the LCX19C, same resolution, but a smaller screen 7" diagonal, still 480x640 resolution, and a cut out of 6.8"x9.3".

Then we drop to sub VGA which I would prefer to avoid as both of us have poor reading sight, being oldies!

I had assumed that bracket mounted was a hostage to it being knocked off in a moment of gut wrenching panic - am I wrong???

did,nt some one say to be careful about buying stuff from the States something to do with guarantee's not valid in the UK or Europe , any way back to the question, bigger the better make sure you can dim the screen
for night work as you soon lose your ,night vision if you rely on your plotter for navigation ,mine is a black and white screen on the Garmin i find it much
better for teaching with than the colour plotters and cheaper by a couple of quid,
